DC’s Suicide Squad director David Ayer says that his cut was edited after post, and his version was “vastly better” than what was released in theatres. The director posted his thoughts on Twitter when a fan replied about the director’s cut adding scenes after the film had been released.

There has been a lot of news regarding the Suicide Squad getting that Ayer Cut. Especially after Zack Snyder was able to release his version of Justice League on HBO Max. Many fans already have speculated that there should have been more.

And a few months ago, we reported that a fan was able to see the Ayer Cut. It detailed the length of the film, Jared Leto’s performance was stealing the show, there was more of Ben Affleck’s Batman, and so much more. Overall, it says that it’s a very different film from what we had seen in cinemas back in 2016.

David Ayer himself kept saying that he hoped to see his version of the film to be released at some point. Some reports even speculated that it might get released this 2023.

In a recent online discussion regarding Suicide Squad, one said that a director’s cut adds scenes after a film has been made. Ayer promptly answered:

Normally you’re absolutely right. This is an extraordinary case of a movie being utterly re-engineered in post. It’s not a couple cut scenes being added.

The nature of the film was fundamentally changed. I’m looking you in the eye telling you this. My cut is vastly better.

In other words, the director himself is saying that he was not involved with the theatrical cut. Suicide Squad was edited after he submitted his version of the film to Warner Bros and DC Films.

And based on what happened with Zack Snyder’s Justice League. It’s possible that even without Joss Whedon’s involvement replaced Snyder as the director, the film might have had edits too.

Ayer has expressed his hopes that the new heads of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, might give his version of the film a chance. Unfortunately, the Ayer Cut might still have some work to do, as some have reported. It still needs work, especially close to the end of the film.

While Zack Snyder had a rare opportunity to be able to finish Justice League on HBO Max the way he wanted it, or at least close to it. Snyder did say that he originally wanted Wayne T. Carr to show up as Green Lantern, which was filmed but was cut. Green Lantern’s scene was replaced by Martian Manhunter, who was played by Harry Lennix.

HBO Max’s release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League has met a lot of positive reviews. Many have considered that Snyder’s version was vastly superior to Joss Whedon’s 2017 version.

Fans hope that David Ayer could get the same opportunity. As a fan myself, I am hoping for the same thing. I want to see Jared Leto be the Joker he wanted to be. I mean, I was really looking forward to seeing his Joker, but his portrayal in the Suicide Squad felt he was put on the sidelines. I do think there is so much more to Joker than what we saw on film.

Will We Ever See The Ayer Cut?

I don’t know if Warner Bros Discovery will give the budget to get the Ayer Cut done. Considering WBD is doing what it can to save money. The company has already cancelled several projects like Batgirl, The Wonder Twins and Strange Adventures.

And currently, the SnyderVerse is also close to ending its run. Now that we don’t have Henry Cavill as Superman or Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam, it just feels like the current DC Universe won’t ever be the same. We don’t even know if they’ll continue the universe after Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Will there be a complete reboot? Or will the universe continue to be there but with changes along the way?

It’s possible that we will get to see David Ayer’s Suicide Squad eventually. But it all depends on the priorities of DC Studios and Warner Bros Discovery. At the moment, DC Studios is focusing on the reboot, and WBD is focused on rebuilding. I think releasing a director’s cut is the least of their concerns at this time.
