Henry Cavill Officially NOT Playing Superman In James Gunn’s New DC

We’ve got some breaking news here as James Gunn just tweeted out some news about his new DC Slate he is presenting to David Zaslav in the next week or two and about Henry Cavill NOT playing The Man Of Steel in the newest iteration of Superman.

Subsequently, Henry Cavill has taken to Instagram to officially speak about not playing Supes.

Now, I’ve purposely used the term “playing” instead of “returning” (even though that would have been a great Superman Returns joke) because based off James Gunn’s tweet, there still may be a small (very small) possibility. I say this because Henry Cavill’s language sounds more definite.

Let’s take a look at Gunn’s tweets:

That’s quite a shocker and already there is a frenzied reaction online about this announcement (because of course there is, it’s 2022). So, Gunn says: “our [Superman] story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.” That sounds very definite but he then went on to state him and Safran are big fans of Henry Cavill and they discussed future possibilities.

This raises a plethora, yes, a plethora of questions. Why was he in Black Adam? Will he still cameo in The Flash? Is The Flash going to end The Snyderverse characters? I personally think so now. It seems that The Flash is the perfect way to start from scratch. They would definitely have an easier time closing the book on those characters with the mechanisms used in The Flash.

However, there’s also the possibility of those future projects. Would Henry Cavill return as Superman for something like Kingdom Come, where he plays an older Superman? That could work and be very cool. But, it all depends on who they cast for the new Superman and what they do with his character arc.

In another tweet, Gunn answered a fan that asked if this would be another Superman origin story:

It’s not an origin story, so it doesn’t look good for even a Kingdom Come film.

Especially for what Henry Cavill said on Instagram:

Now that sounds final. “My turn to wear the cape has passed.”

James Gunn also stated he will be and has been writing the Superman script and no director is attached yet.
