The Penguin Teaser Trailer Has You Rooting For The Villain

First Image From The Penguin HBO Series Released

The first trailer for Matt Reeves’ The Penguin on Max makes you root for the Batman villain to win. We’ve been excited to see the spin-off sequel series, as it is set one week after the events of Reeves The Batman. Not only that, but the show is also made to set up The Batman Part Two.

Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin, played by Colin Farrell, appeared in the film. It was evident that he was not the big villain that we were expecting, like he is in the comics. In The Batman, Cobblepot works as a lieutenant for Gotham’s top crime boss Carmine Falcone, played by John Turturro.

The new series will focus on the rise of power of Oswald Cobblepot, as the position of a crime boss is left open for the taking.

Max’s teaser trailer for The Penguin was just released not long ago, and so far, it’s looking quite incredible. Colin Farrell still looks impressively unrecognisable, and it shows that he is the star of the show.

The trailer reminds me of HBO’s Sopranos and Al Pacino’s Scarface. Both feature a villain that we root for. In Sopranos, we see a mob boss who does illegal activities but has a complex character with his own set of moral values and struggles. While Scarface shows us a charismatic and ambitious drug lord.

I do want to see what will get us to empathise with The Penguin. But already, I am rooting for him to win because I want him to face Batman when Oswald is at his best.

Since viewers of the new Max series are expected to have seen The Batman, we know that he still needs to earn his position as Gotham’s new kingpin. It also shows that Cobblepot and Sofia Falcone, Carmine Falcone’s daughter, played by Cristin Milioti (How I Met Your Mother, Palm Springs), are having a nice dinner together. It is known that he would be fighting against her for that position.

It also showed that The Penguin wouldn’t get his rise to power that easily. Michael Kelly (Jack Ryan) and Shohreh Aghdashloo (The Punisher) also appear, but we don’t know their roles yet. However, it does seem that they are making his life difficult. The trailer ends showing Cobblepot not hesitating to kill and laughing about it.

We are wondering if Robert Pattinson will show up in the new series as Bruce Wayne or Batman, or maybe even both.

The trailer hasn’t shown us much, since it’s an “in-production” teaser. I do presume that they rushed this teaser just to prove to the masses (and to the US Department of Justice) that Warner Bros Discovery is actually making new shows.

Clancy Brown (John Wick: Chapter 4) will be joining the cast of the new series as Salvatore Maroni, along with Michael Zegen (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Alberto Falcone, Rhenzy Feliz, Deirdre O’Connell, James Madio, Scott Cohen, Theo Rossi, Carmen Ejogo, Francois Chao, and David H. Holmes. The show doesn’t have a confirmed release date as of yet, but it is set to have eight episodes. The first three will be directed by Craig Zobel, who is known for Mare of Easttown (2021) and One Dollar (2018).

The Penguin series is one of the highlighted projects among the upcoming projects on HBO Max’s rebranding as simply “Max,” which includes developing shows like the Harry Potter reboot, The Conjuring series, The Big Bang Theory spin-off, a new Game of Thrones prequel, and more.
