Joker 2 Getting Closer To Being Made Than Ever Before

Joker-2-Reportedly-Starting-Production-In-2023

It’s been revealed that Todd Phillips’ Joker sequel (Joker 2) is closer to actually being made over at Warner Bros. Pictures than ever before.

This news comes via insider Matthew Belloni over at Puck News who suggested that Warner Bros Discover’s CEO, David Zazlav, is very keen on getting Todd Phillips more involved in the DC Universe moving forward.

Belloni’s recent report stated that the studio is “getting pretty close” to greenlighting Todd Phillips’ follow-up.

I was quite surprised to read this because I was under the impression that Warner Bros had already greenlit the movie.

However, it turns out that the movie is still not officially happening over at the movie studio.

Phillips’ first Joker movie was a huge hit and ended up grossing an eye-watering $1.074 billion worldwide.

The movie was made for a relatively small budget of $55 million, so it made all of its money back and then some.

The movie starred Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck and he’s been rather coy about whether he’d return for a sequel or not.

“I mean, I dunno. From when we were shooting, we started to —you know, uhh, this is an interesting guy,” Phoenix told The Playlist.

“There are some things we could do with this guy and could [explore] further. But as to whether we actually will? I don’t know.”

Phillips has even stated in a previous interview that his initial pitch to Warners was an entirely new label under the DC Films banner.

It was presumed that this new label would be for edgier, maybe R-Rated DC comic book movies.

“When I pitched them ‘Joker,’ it wasn’t a movie, it was, let’s do a whole label,” Phillips said in 2019.

“They shut that down quickly and I get it. Who am I to walk in and start a label at a film studio? But they said, let’s do this one.”

Phillips added, “Here’s the real truth about a sequel. While Joaquin and I have talked about it, and while touring the world with Warner Bros executives — going to Toronto, and Venice, and other places — of course, we’re sitting at dinner and they’re saying, ‘So, have you thought about…?’ But, talking about contracts, there’s not a contract for us to even write a sequel, we’ve never approached Joaquin to be in a sequel. Will that happen? Again, I just think the article was anticipatory at best.”
