Joker 2 Isn’t Happening Just Yet According To Director Todd Phillips

Everybody got rather excited when they heard that Warner Bros. Pictures had greenlit a Joker sequel after Todd Phillips’ first movie did so well at the box office.

It was reported by The Hollywood Reporter, that Todd Phillips would be returning to direct the movie and Joaquin Phoenix would be back as Arthur Fleck.

However, this might not be entirely right just yet, as director and writer Todd Phillips told IndieWire that the Joker sequel isn’t happening just this minute.

Here’s what he had to say on the matter in full:

While Joaquin and I have talked about it, and while touring the world with Warner Bros executives — going to Toronto, and Venice, and other places — of course, we’re sitting at dinner and they’re saying, ‘So, have you thought about…?’ But, talking about contracts, there’s not a contract for us to even write a sequel, we’ve never approached Joaquin to be in a sequel. Will that happen? Again, I just think the article was anticipatory at best.

Sounds like the Joker sequel isn’t quite in the works yet

Now, this could be Phillips merely trying to prevent this news from getting out of hand, or it could be a case of The Hollywood Reporter having jumped the gun and revealed the news too soon.

What I believe to be the case is that Warner Bros, Todd Phillips, Scott Silver and Joaquin Phoenix are all still trying to work out the final details of whatever contracts they have to draw up.

It might be all basically done, but nothing has been made official yet.

Studios do have a tendency of greenlighting sequels quite far in advance and then doing the boring contract stuff later.

This could be the cast with the Joker sequel.
