James Gunn Has Almost Finished Superman Legacy’s Script

As the upcoming The Flash is to reset or somewhat reset the DC Universe, James Gunn‘s Superman Legacy is its true beginning. The DC Studio co-CEO is penning the script himself and recent social media interactions reveal that the studio head is ‘very far’ along his task as the film’s writer.

Officially, Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran unveiled the initial part of the DCU slate for Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.

Superman Legacy is the first of five movies under the slate. The title is followed by The Brave and The Bold, an Untitled Swamp Thing movie, The Authority and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

As soon as the initial part of the new DC Slate got unveiled, people checked out the specific comic books that serve as the blueprints for what’s in store for DC Studios. Since then, many have been on the lookout for any updates about the titles, including the ones for the small screen as well.

After sharing his touching story about his pet being more welcoming after months of getting rescued, a fan couldn’t help but ask about the Superman project. Twitter user Alfred Pennyworth @A1fredl asked:

How far are you in Superman:Legacy script?

Where Gunn immediately answered:

Very far.

Bleeding Cool sums up the social media interaction that transpired under the DC Studios co-CEO. One of the most important of which is the progress he is at regarding the script that will be the springboard of the new DCU. The filmmaker himself said that the true beginning of the new DCU is Superman Legacy.

Gunn’s Superman Legacy has author Grant Morrison and illustrator Frank Quitely’s All-Star Superman as its source. The comics ran from November 2005 to October 2008.

The series effectively reintroduced Superman to the new and younger generation of comic book readers. While it isn’t an origin story, it still shows Superman’s heroism and the sacrifices he had to make, including losing his own life.

Apparently, the series depicts the superhero to be dying due to overexposure to the Sun courtesy of his arch nemesis Lex Luthor. Still, he accomplishes The Twelve Labors of Superman, helping humans and Kryptonians before his death. In the end, Superman, able to declare his love to Lois Lane, perished and became a solar radio-consciousness that powered the Sun.

The comics’ storyline definitely does not fit in just one movie. The Twelve Labors alone would require a few hours to put on any screen. Then again, Gunn has yet to reveal which aspect of the comic book series plot will be used for Superman Legacy.

If ever they break it down into a trilogy, I suspect the first part will be his overexposure, then the twelve labors and finally, his ultimate sacrifice.

Just through this summary, many new faces will grace the silver screen for the new Superman story that Gunn will serve up by July 11, 2025. However, with the premise of the Man of Steel dying again, some have the impression that it is just going to be a more colourful version of “Death of Superman”.
