James Gunn’s new Superman film is now officially titled ‘Superman Legacy’, and it starts the new DC Universe. Gunn and Peter Safran emphasized that the new Superman movie is the start of the new DC Universe.

As the new Superman film was the first, they announced back on December 15, 2022, in a sense, this is nothing new. Gunn even details that this will focus on a younger version of Superman.

And that he is already writing the film. It’s also clear that this is not Superboy. Furthermore, Gunn has already confirmed that this won’t be an origin story.

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran stated:

It’s not an origins story, it focuses on Superman’s balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He’s the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, he’s kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.

What’s new with the latest announcement is the title ‘Superman Legacy.’ And the film is set for PG-13.

Safran also cited:

This is really the start of the DCU.

Gunn has detailed some information about Superman in the new film. During the press conference (via Collider), he said:

He’s working. He’s a reporter. He’s at the Daily Planet. Again, we’re coming into a world where superheroes exist and have existed. So, does that mean Batman might be a couple years older than Superman? Yes, it could be.

The Man Of Steel will be very different in the DCU!

This alone would be an exciting concept. Superman trying to blend in and learning that there are other superheroes than himself. To tell you the truth, this was something that was lacking in the Zack Snyder films, which I know Henry Cavill wanted to dive into.

Unfortunately, Cavill is now out of the picture. But we wonder who the new Superman will be as the project moves forward.

The movie is scheduled to be released on July 11, 2025.
