Puss In Boots 2 Tops The UK Box Office

It’s been revealed that the sequel to Puss In Boots (which we’re going to refer to as Puss In Boots 2 for SEO reasons) took the cream this weekend as it sits at number one at the UK box office.

Puss in Boots was a role that we first saw in animation in Shrek 2 back in 2004. The character was voiced by Antonio Banderas, and he really seems to love being the voice of Puss… in Boots!

The movie ended up making over £3.4m this weekend across 487 sites. This is the first major family release at the UK box office from a studio since Matilda: The Musical which was released back in November 2022. The movie ended up making £1.71m on Saturday alone. Now that’s impressive!

Avatar: Way Of The Water managed to cling on in second place at the UK box office, earning itself a further £902k. This means that the movie has made a total of £53.6m in just over eight weeks in the UK so far.

So, what about the other movies at the UK box office? Well, M. Night Shyamalan’s new movie, Knock At The Cabin, ended up opening at the UK box office in third place, which isn’t terrible.

The movie comes from Universal Studios and it stars Guardians Of The Galaxy and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery star, Dave Bautista.

The movie ended up making £616k at its opening weekend in the United Kingdom. The other new release, The Whale, opened with a total of £448k over 289 sites. I have a feeling that that movie, which Darren Aronofsky directed, will end up getting more viewers come awards season.

Why, you ask? Because its lead, Brendan Fraser, is a strong contender for the Best Actor award at this year’s Oscars.

In fifth place, we have the Hindi/Tamil language release, Pathaan, which grossed £448k in its second week from just 154 sites which is a strong result and only narrowly defeated by Brendan Fraser’s The Whale.

The weekend’s box office was up almost by 10%, with an extra £8.7m from last weekend which bodes well for the school holidays, which begin on Friday in some parts of the UK.

Other regions will wait a further week before breaking up, so we should see some solid figures for Puss In Boots: The Last Wish as it goes really unattested over this period.

[Editor’s Note] On a personal note, I went to see Puss In Boots: The Last Wish at the cinema and I thought the movie was brilliant! I don’t know why, but I have a real soft spot for Puss and I think that Antonio Banderas puts so much emotion into his performance. It just works and this movie has an incredible animation style.

I also think this is one of the best – if not the best – of the movies set in this Shrek cinematic universe that DreamWorks has created. It’s a great watch and a movie that the whole family fan can enjoy. I highly recommend it.
