Keanu Reeves will be back as Constantine as it’s been revealed that Warner Bros. Pictures has just greenlit the sequel! Yep. You read that correctly. The 2005 Constantine movie is getting a sequel and the John Wick actor will be back playing the titular character. This is something that fans of the original movie have wanted for years, and it’s kind of crazy to hear that the sequel is actually going to happen!
This news was revealed by Deadline. Their report also revealed that the upcoming movie would be directed by Francis Lawrence, who also directed the first movie. The first Constantine movie was actually Lawrence’s first movie. It was also revealed that Akiva Goldsman would write the screenplay and produce the project through his Weed Road Pictures, alongside Bad Robot’s J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella.
Keanu Reeves Constantine movie is getting a sequel!
When the movie was released in cinemas back in 2005, it ended up grossing over $200 million at the worldwide box office. Ever since the movie was released, there have been calls for a sequel. Reeves will be playing the role of John Constantine, a supernatural exorcist and demonologist that became a very popular DC Comics character. Reeves wasn’t anything like the comic book character. Constantine in the comics is blonde and from Liverpool in the UK.
However, Reeves did do something very fun and exciting with the character. I have to say that I got a real kick out of watching Reeves’ Constantine fighting Demons from Hell and the Devil himself. In the first movie, Keeves’ Constantine battled the archangel Gabriel and Lucifer. In the movie, Lucifer was played by Peter Stormare, and Gabriel was portrayed by Tilda Swinton. Rachel Weisz played Angela Dodson, Djimon Hounsou played Midnite, and Shia LaBeouf was also in the movie as Chas.
Can you believe a Constantine sequel is happening?
We’ve actually just seen another version of the character in The Sandman series on Netflix. The show, which has been a huge hit, has Jenna Coleman playing Johanna Constantine. I thought that she was perfectly serviceable in the role. However, there were a lot of people online that got very, very annoyed that they had gender-swapped the character. I’m going to be honest, when I first heard the news that Jenna Coleman had been cast as Johanna Constantine, I thought that she might be playing the character from the comic books. There is a Johanna Constantine in the original Sandman comics.
However, it turned out that they had indeed gender-swapped the character for the series. That angered a number of people online. But, I think that they can do whatever they want with these characters, as long as what they end up doing makes sense in the context of the series or movie. In The Sandman’s case, it did. I’m also really looking forward to seeing Keanu Reeves’ version of the character back in the upcoming Constantine sequel.
There’s no release date for this upcoming Constantine 2 movie.
