Fantastic Four Movie Has Found Its Director

Fantastic-Four-To-Be-Marvel-Phase-6-First-Film

The Fantastic Four movie might finally have a director! It’s being reported that WandaVision director, Matt Shakman is being lined up by Marvel Studios to direct the upcoming movie, which will be the first family’s first foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and we here at Small Screen can’t wait to welcome them! This report comes to us via Deadline, and we have a lot to say about it!

According to the media outlet, Marvel and Matt Shakman are currently in negotiations for him to direct the upcoming MCU movie. This comes after Jon Watts left the project due to “creative differences”. It does seem as though that excuse is used a lot in Hollywood these days. However, it’s put the project in a rather sticky situation, and Marvel has been looking far and wide for the movie’s new director.

There had been reports that Marvel was looking at Steven Spielberg to direct the project. However, it was then said that he passed on it. I’m not sure about those reports, but it would have been interesting to see Spielberg direct that movie. That said, it was reported that Marvel was looking at more experienced directors for the movie. I wouldn’t be surprised if they looked at the likes of John Krasinski, Joseph Kosinski, Peyton Reed (who has wanted to make the movie for years), Justin Lin, Deborah Chow and maybe even Leigh Whannell.

These names were all on my list for potential directors to helm the upcoming MCU movie. However, it seems as though Marvel Studios opted to stick with who they know. Matt Shakman directed all episodes of the WandaVision series for Disney Plus. However, before that, he worked on some other big shows, such as Game Of Thrones, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia and The Great. He’s definitely no newbie to the director game.

Would Matt Shakman be a good choice?

Interestingly enough, this wouldn’t be the first time that Marvel’s taken a director who’s been making a name for themselves in the TV space. The Russo brothers, for instance, were making the hit TV series, Community, before they were tasked with making Captain America: The Winter Solider. The brothers then went on to make Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame for Marvel Studios. There have even been rumours that they could return to Marvel to make the MCU’s first X-Men movie, or maybe even a solo Wolverine project. That would be pretty epic if you ask me.

Personally, I think that Shakman would be an excellent choice for the first Fantastic Four movie. It was also revealed that he dropped out of the Star Trek movie he was going to direct, and I’m pretty certain it’s because he really wants a crack at what could end up being one of the most lucrative and important Marvel movies made to date. Marvel’s first family is a very big deal, and they need to get it right. Shakman could be the person for the job.
