You follows the character Joe Goldberg (played by Penn Badgley) – a bookstore manager who also happens to be a serial killer. Joe has a habit of falling in love and becoming obsessed with certain women who cross his path. And this never ends well.

As well as its tense atmosphere and never-ending plot twists and turns, You is also respected for its production and cinematography. Stock videos are fused skillfully with techniques, such as the use of dolly shots, to evoke a mood of creepy voyeurism. The director has spoken about how the show’s visual aspects have been crucial in developing the audience’s understanding of Joe’s character and creating the overall tone of the series.

Penn Badgley – of course – resumes his starring role as Joe in You for season four, and viewers are treated to a whole new ensemble of characters that Joe meets during his new life in London. These characters include the frosty Kate (played by Charlotte Ritchie), Adam (Lukas Gage), and Lady Phoebe (played by Eastenders Tilly Keeper). Joe also crosses paths with Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman), Rhys (played by Ed Speeler from Downton Abbey and more as the series progresses.

This season also sees the return of Marienne, played by Tati Gabrielle. There was plenty of speculation around the possible return of the character Ellie, played by the now much-in-demand Jenna Ortega – but this hasn’t transpired.

Season four of You is a wild rollercoaster ride of twists and turns – exactly as fans would expect! The fourth series starts with a bang, as we watch Joe seeking out Marienne in London but ultimately deciding to let her go.

As the season progresses, viewers see Joe developing an interest in Kate Galvin, the girlfriend of a fellow professor, Malcolm Harding – who is murdered shortly afterwards. This turns out to be the first in a series of murders that are dubbed the ‘Eat the Rich’ killings. And in a neat plot twist, it’s Joe attempting to solve the crimes.

Oh, and the giant plexiglass cage returns for another outing.

Filming of You season four began in March 2022 in London and wrapped in August of the same year. Filming took place at sites including the banks of the River Thames and the University of London’s Royal Holloway. The fifteenth-century Tudor manor Knebworth House in Hertfordshire was the filming location for Lady Phoebe’s party in episode four. If it looks familiar, it’s because it was also used as a set for season five of The Crown.

The medieval church of St Bartholomew the Great was the filming location for Simon’s funeral in You season four – for super fans wanting to visit this beautiful landmark, it’s relatively near Farringdon and Barbican stations. After the funeral, Kate pops into a pub for a drink before re-joining the rest of the group: these scenes were filmed at The Builders’ Arms in Kensington.

Badgley himself directed episode nine of season four.

And finally, the big question: what’s next for the show? Specifically, is a season five in the pipeline? Although there has been no official confirmation that a fifth series will be produced, the signs are promising for fans. Not least due to the immense ongoing popularity of the show!

It was revealed not too long ago that the show had been renewed by Netflix for a fifth and final season.

Penn Badgley basically predicted all of this in an interview with IndieWire, where he stated the following:

It feels to me like we need to do another season. It feels to me like Joe needs to get what’s coming to him, and now he has further to fall because he has all this power and wealth.” He then added, “We always wanted to be responsible and it’s not just the kind of thing we can let keep going because it’s doing well.

The final season of the show is expected to drop in late 2024. It was actually officially announced by Netflix that the final season would be landing on the streaming platform in 2024. However, they didn’t give us an exact release date. The countdown begins…

All four seasons of You are available to stream on Netflix right now.
