It’s been revealed that Warner Bros Discovery begged Joker and Joker: Folie A Deux director, Todd Phillips to run DC Studios before eventually hiring James Gunn. This report comes to us via The New York Post.
According to their inside source, “the whole town turned the job down” before it was offered to Gunn and Safran. They went on to reveal that Warner Bros Discovery even went to Joker director, Todd Phillips before hiring The Suicide Squad director, James Gunn as DC Studios’ head.
The New York Post’s report even stated that Warner Bros Discovery “begged” him to take the role, but he flatly refused to be in charge of DC Studios.
Moreover, their source added that there might be some trepidation inside Warners over Gunn’s relative inexperience at the top of a corporate hierarchy. The source stated:
Gunn has never run anything. I wonder if big filmmakers will work for another director with zero experience guiding movies through a huge grinder of a system. He’s not Kevin Feige.
Would Todd Phillips have been a better choice to run DC Studios?

I have to say that this doesn’t come as much of a surprise to me. It was revealed a few months back that Warner Bros Discovery’s CEO, David Zalslav is a big fan of Phillips and even asked him to lead DC moving forward.
Back then, it was reported that he turned down the offer. However, we’re now hearing that they begged him to take the role and that they asked everyone they could possibly think of in Hollywood before landing on James Gunn, who was the only person to say yes to the offer!
That’s pretty incredible to hear, and it shows how everyone in Hollywood thinks that DC is a sinking ship and can’t be saved. However, I have faith in Gunn, and I think that he’s making all the right moves in his effort to turn DC Studios into a Hollywood powerhouse!
How’s James Gunn been doing so far?
There are many people on the Internet who despise Gunn and what he’s doing. Only a few weeks after becoming the co-CEO of DC Studios, Gunn has made the decision to scrap the SnyderVerse basically in its entirety and reboot the DC Universe, which I think is the best way to move forward.
The SnyderVerse has given us some great things, such as Henry Cavill’s Superman, Man Of Steel, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the first Wonder Woman movie, Ben Affleck’s Batman and even the first Aquaman movie. However, it’s also given us quite a bit of bad, such as Justice League, Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman 1984.
It’s time for something new, and even though I agree that getting rid of Henry Cavill as Superman isn’t the best decision in the world, I’m looking forward to seeing what Gunn has in store for us with his new Superman movie.
Maybe I’m being overly optimistic, but I think that we’re in for a treat as far as the DC Universe is concerned, and it seems as though people in Hollywood are now interested and excited about playing in the DC sandbox again, which is half of the battle already won!
