Here’s The Midnight Club’s plot synopsis, courtesy of Netflix:

At a hospice for terminally ill young adults, eight patients come together every night at midnight to tell each other stories — and make a pact that the next of them to die will give the group a sign from the beyond. Based on the 1994 novel of the same name as well as other works by Christopher Pike.

The whole first season is set in Brightcliffe hospice. The series’ showrunners are Mike Flanagan and Leah Fong. As far as the second season’s concerned, there’s nothing official from Netflix yet. However, there is hope. The show’s creators have revealed that they are keen to make another season of the show.

Here’s what Mike Flanagan had to say about a second season during an interview with Teen Vogue:

This was designed to be ongoing. I don’t know if it will. We’ll see how it goes, and we probably won’t know for another month or so what Netflix wants to do. But this was very much designed to continue. Pike has 80 books, so we have a lot of incredible material to pull from,” he added, referring to Christopher Pike’s novels from which the series derives.

Moreover, Flanagan is not the only one who would love to see a second season. The show’s executive producer, Trevor Macy, made the following statement about a potential second season of the show:

There’s a couple ideas for season two. but I won’t jinx it.

While Netflix has not yet renewed The Midnight Club for a second season, Flanagan did reveal during an interview with Variety that he has a plan for multiple seasons of the series.

He agreed to let me take a shot with the show and the pitch was, we’ll do The Midnight Club — but the stories the kids tell will be other Christopher Pike books, and he really liked that idea. And Netflix ended up optioning a pile of Christopher Pike’s stuff — 28 books.

As far as a release date for a second season’s concerned, it all depends on if and when Netflix renews the show. The first thing the show’s creators and producers will be hoping is that the new series performs well on the streaming platform. At the moment, the series is doing pretty well with subscribers. It hasn’t been a huge hit yet. It currently sits in fourth position in Netflix’s top ten shows list (via FlixPatrol). However, it was only just released on the streaming platform, so there is time for more people to find the show and for it to perform better.

The show premiered on Netflix on October 7th. We are now a few days away from its release, and it’s performing solidly. So, at the moment, things are looking good for a second season. However, we will be keeping a close eye on things. As for when it could be released, I think that a late 2023/early 2024 release date would make the most sense. These shows tend to take about 15 months to make from start to finish. So, the timings would work for an early 2024 release, if they start work on the second season straight away.

OK, so this is where we delve into SPOILER-territory. Let’s talk about which actors could be returning for a second season. The first thing we have to do is address the elephant in the room. We won’t be seeing Anya in the second season. Therefore, it looks like Ruth Codd will not reprise the role in a subsequent season.

However, it is possible that she could return in a flashback sequence or, dare we go there, as a ghost. However, that is highly unlikely. Her story arc came to a touching and pretty satisfactory conclusion, so it would be rather odd for her to return. We do expect Iman Benson and Igby Rigney to return for a second season.

Then there’s Heather Langenkamp, who will surely return as the mysterious Dr Georgina Stanton. Here are the other actors who could be returning for a second season:

• Annarah Cymone as Sandra
• William Chris Sumpter as Chris Spencer
• Adia as Cheri
• Aya Furukawa as Natsuki
• Sauriyan Sapkota as Amesh
• Samantha Sloyan as Shasta
• Zach Gilford as Mark
