The Empress Season 2 is something that fans of the new hit German show on Netflix are desperate to watch. However, is a second season of this new show on the cards over at the streamer? Well, that’s what we’re going to try and answer in this article. We’re also going to look over its potential release date, cast, story and more. We’re also going to look into whether Netflix has released or will release a trailer for a potential second season.
However, we do have to make it very clear that not all the answers are out there at the moment because it’s still very early days as far as this new show’s concerned. That said, we will update this article as soon as we get any new information about The Empress Season 2 on Netflix. Right, without any further ado, let’s talk about whether this new brilliant German series will get a second season.
Is The Empress Season 2 happening over at Netflix?
Before we get into all of that, let’s go over what this new series is all about. Here’s the show’s plot synopsis, courtesy of Netflix:
Two young people meet. A fateful encounter – the proverbial love at first sight. He is Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary, she is Elisabeth von Wittelsbach, Princess of Bavaria and the sister of the woman Franz is to marry…
Netflix seems to be hitting out of the park as far as his period dramas are concerned. They’ve already made two of the biggest period dramas made in recent memory in Bridgerton and The Crown. It now seems as though they have another real winner on their hands with The Empress.
As far as trying to answer the question of whether a season two of this new series is in the works, we’re going to have to say that it’s just far too early to know. The new series hasn’t really done enough to earn itself a second season given the fact that it was only just released on the streaming platform on September 29th. Netflix tends to wait at least a few months before they decide to renew or cancel shows. So, I would expect an announcement on whether season two is happening or not in December or maybe even in January.
When could The Empress Season 2 be released on Netflix?
This is not an easy question to answer because we still don’t know whether a second season is on the cards or not over at Netflix. So, the best we can do is offer you an estimate of when the second season could be released. Given that these shows tend to take about 15 months from start to finish, then I would assume that the second season should be released on Netflix towards the end of 2023. However, it could easily be pushed into the beginning of 2024.
What could happen in Season 2?
So, what could happen in a season two should it get the greenlight? I know that’s a question that many of you would love to get an answer to. Well, the honest answer is that we don’t know yet. What we do know is that The Empress, Elisabeth, is going to have to go through some changes in a second season.
In the first season, after she realises that she can’t do anything to really help the poor, she decides to party away her days (and nights) with Franz’s brother Maximillian. This ends up further damaging her reputation with her subjects. Sophia then proposes that Elisabeth should go back home to Bavaria, and Franz ends up agreeing. However, before Franz tells Elisabeth to leave, she discovers that she is finally pregnant. This leaves the Empress heartbroken and he decides not to tell her husband the news (scandalous!).
However, when Elizabeth is ready to leave, her cartridge is stopped by an angry crowd of people that had been amassing at the palace gates to denounce the Emperor. Though the guards ask for the carriage to be turned around, Elisabeth, in a pretty awesome moment, demands the gates be opened. The Empress embraces the crowd and proclaims: “I see you” before telling them she is with child.
That’s a pretty insane moment to end the series on, and I know that people will want to know whether her actions will win over the hearts and minds of her people. However, I want to know whether she can forgive Franz. I also want to know what Sophia’s plans are for the Empress now that she’s pregnant? I’m sure that all of these questions will be answered in a second season should Netflix give it the greenlight.
Who could star in a second season?
As for who could star in a second season, I would expect most of the show’s cast to return for a potential season two. That means that likes of Devrim Lingnau, Philip Froissant, Svenja Jung, Raymond Tarabay, Jonathan Failla, Johannes Nussbaum, Almila Bagriacik, Elisa Schlott, Wiebke Puls, Melika Foroutan and Jördis Triebel would all return for Season 2. I think fans would be very happy to hear that all the actors should be returning for another bunch of episodes in the, hopefully, not-so-distant future.
So, I would expect Devrim Lingnau to reprise her role as Elisabeth von Wittelsbach, aka Sisi. And then, I’ve listed out the other cast members and the characters they play below. I’m expecting all of them to return for season two should it get renewed:
• Phillip Froissant as Emperor Franz Joseph
• Melika Foroutan as Sophia
• Elisa Schlott as Helene
• Johannes Nussbaum as Archduke Maximilian
• Jördis Triebel as Princess Ludovika
• Hanna Hilsdorf as Amalia
• Svenja Jung as Louise
• Raymond Tarabay as Ambassadeur De Bourqueney
The show was directed by Florian Cossen and Katrin Gebbe, and I would expect that they should be back directing the new episodes should season two get the greenlight. I’m pretty sure it’s only a matter of time before Netflix reveals that they are making another season of this hit series.
Is there a trailer for season two?
At the moment, given the fact that we don’t know whether season two is going to happen or not, there is no trailer for The Empress Season 2 yet. However, I don’t think it’ll be too long before Netflix officially renews the series for another season, which means that the trailer should be with us towards the middle of 2023. I will update this article the minute I hear anything about the show’s second season.
