Sydney Sweeney Playing Spider-Woman In Madame Web Movie

Sydney Sweeney is reportedly playing Julia Carpenter also known as the Spider-Woman in Sony’s Madame Web movie. Very little is known about Madame Web, right now all we know is that it is part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. And the only official announcement from Sony has been Dakota Johnson, who is playing Madame Web.

Though it was not clear who she would be playing. Is it Cassandra Web, the original Madame Web or Julia Carpenter?

Marvel comics has always implied that Cassandra Web is an old blind lady. This is why fans doubted Johnson’s role would be Cassandra. Some presumed that she might be playing Carpenter instead because of her age. But this was never clear.

All we had to go on was set photos which had Dakota Johnson wearing a red coat, which Carpenter is known for wearing in the comics.

Roles in the movie have been very hush-hush. So far, no roles have been announced other than Dakota Johnson’s main lead. Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Emma Roberts, Mike Epps, Zosia Mamet, Celeste O’Connor, Adam Scott, and Tahar Rahim are cast in the film. At the moment, we only hear rumours of possible roles.

Some have even suggested that Roberts and Scott would be playing a young version of May and Ben Parker. Then again, we also heard that Roberts might be playing Spider-Gwen.

Sydney Sweeney Could Be Spider-Woman in Madame Web

A report by CBR tells us that the Euphoria actress Sydney Sweeney could be taking the role of Julia Carpenter. If that is true, then Dakota Johnson is most likely playing the original Madame Web, Cassandra.

Meanwhile, Jeff Sneider of The Hot Mic, who is a reliable industry insider, has revealed that Sweeney will be taking the role of Carpenter. If this is true, then she could also show up as Spider-Woman in the film or in possible future instalments. In the comics, Carpenter is the second Spider-Woman to take that name.

Jessica Drew is the first one who used the name, which originated back in 1977. Carpenter then used the Spider-Woman name in 1984. She first appeared in Secret Wars No. 6 back in October 1984. She was created by Jim Shooter and Mike Zeck.

In the comics, Carpenter is just like Spider-Man. Her powers came from an experiment using spider-venom and plant extracts. She originally wore the black suit which inspired Spider-Man’s black symbiote costume.

Other than being Spider-Woman, Julia Carpenter also took the name Arachne. And she became the second Madame Web. Cassandra Web was able to pass down her powers to Carpenter before her death.

For now, we don’t have any information about the plot. The official synopsis indicates:

The film will be an origin story of the clairvoyant, whose psychic abilities allow her to see within the spider world.

Sony has been aggressively making Spider-Man-related films without the titular character. Since Marvel has a lock on Tom Holland’s Spider-Man at the moment. Sony has only been using known anti-villains as their heroes for their own Spider-Man Universe.

So far, Tom Hardy’s Venom is the only one gaining some traction, with two films already released and the third one just started filming.

Jared Leto’s Morbius has struggled at the box office. Because of it, the future of the Marvel Vampire is in question.

Both franchises have shown their connection to the MCU, even though it is implied that they exist in a different universe. It seems that Sony hopes that the connection between Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be enough to get people to watch Sony’s films.

Right now, Madame Web and Kraven The Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, are in development. Another Spider-Man spin-off El Muerto is also said to be in development, but we haven’t really heard much except for the casting of Bad Bunny.

While I have reserved feeling about Sony’s Marvel projects, I am hopeful that the newer films after Morbius will turn out better. We have reported before that Kevin Feige might have some input in Sony’s Madame Web.

Sydney Sweeney is also attached to star in another comic book movie adaptation Barbarella. This was previously played by the late Jane Fonda in a 1968 movie adaptation.

She also can be seen in HBO’s Euphoria and the first season of The White Lotus. Sony’s Madame Web is scheduled to be released in theatres on February 16, 2024.
