Johnny Depp Has Applied To The Court Of Appeals Over His Libel Case Against The Sun

Johnny Depp The Sun Trial

It’s been revealed that Johnny Depp has applied to the Court of Appeals over his libel case against The Sun newspaper. He was suing The Sun over an article written by their Executive Editor, Dan Wootton, in which he labelled the actor a “wife beater”.

This was in relation to Johnny Depp’s marriage to fellow actor, Amber Heard, which was by all accounts tumultuous between the pair. However, Johnny Depp reportedly had ample evidence against his ex-wife which suggested that he might have very well been a victim of domestic abuse.

There were recordings between the two of them leaked in which they discussed Heard’s many acts of violence against Depp. They revealed recordings of Depp explaining how he lost part of his finger. However, the judge, Mr Justice Nicol, ended up ruling in favour of The Sun, and thus claiming that the term they used against Depp in Wootton’s article was indeed correct.

In November, Mr Justice Nicol dismissed the claim, finding NGN (News Group Newspapers) had proved what was in the article was “substantially true”. He then refused Depp’s permission to appeal later the same month. Here’s what the judge said:

I do not consider that the proposed grounds of appeal have a reasonable prospect of success.

However, Depp is still going ahead and appealing against that ruling, which many thought he would do. Johnny Depp’s been adamant that much of what’s been written and said about him in the press and by his ex-wife is far from the truth, and he wants to clear his name. It’s understandable for the actor to do this, as this is now his career that’s at stake.

Depp’s since been asked to step down from the role of Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3 and has been replaced by Mads Mikkelsen. It also looks like he might not be getting to play Captain Jack Sparrow again in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. However, it’s not all bad news for Depp, as it’s looking likely he’ll be cast as Gomez Addams in Tim Burton’s The Addams Family live-action series.
