What on Earth is going on with the Batwoman series over at The CW? Have they cancelled Batwoman after just three seasons, or are they working on a fourth season of the series?
These are questions that fans of the show have been asking for quite some time.
Why have they been asking these questions?
Well, it’s pretty simple. The CW revealed that they were renewing shows such as The Flash, Riverdale, Superman & Lois and a few others.
These were all the shows that The CW had renewed (via TV Line): All American (Season 5), The Flash (Season 9), Superman & Lois (Season 3), Riverdale (Season 7), Walker (Season 3), Kung Fu (Season 3) and Nancy Drew (Season 4).
However, there were two pretty big shows that were absent from that list: DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow and Batwoman.
Why hasn’t The CW announced Batwoman Season 4 yet?

This then sparked a bit of conversation online.
Fans were questioning whether The CW had opted to cancel both of those shows.
In response to this lack of information and fears that Batwoman had been cancelled, the show’s fans took to Twitter to launch a #RenewBatwoman campaign.
The hashtag actually started to trend on the social media platform.
This then promoted the show’s star Javicia Leslie to retweet an opinion piece from Bleeding Cool arguing against a potential cancellation.
She also addressed her fans directly by writing: “Wow!!!!! We love y’all so much!!!”

She has since been regularly posting tweets with the hashtag #RenewBatwoman.
So, this has all resulted in Batwoman Season 4 being in a state of uncertainty.
However, showrunner Caroline Dries did previously tease the storylines that could come for Leslie’s Batwoman in a potential fourth season.
Season 3’s finale saw Ryan ruin Marquis’ plan to dump acid on Gothic City and reunite with her family.
The final moments of the episode showed a mysterious figure emerging from where the acid was dumped and attacking a reporter at the scene. (Very creepy indeed).
According to Dries, they want to explore Ryan’s path further in Season 4.
Dries confirmed that Batwoman’s half-brother Marquis (Nick Creegan), as well as her biological mother Jada Jet (Robin Givens), will reprise their roles in Batwoman Season 4 (should it get the greenlight).
Dries revealed back in March (via Digital Spy): “[Ryan reuniting with her biological family] was more important to us. Whether or not it sticks is to be seen, if we get a season four.”
She continued: “Ryan having a biological family, in my opinion, enriches her character and widens her world.”

Here, Dries was clearly teasing that Ryan’s biological father might also be making an appearance in a potential fourth season.
You can tell by all of that there’s clearly a lot more story to go over and at least the people behind the show aren’t done.
However, given the fact that The CW itself is currently in a state of perpetual limbo, a fourth season might not be on the cards for Batwoman.
The reason the network is in limbo is due to the fact that its corporate parents, Paramount and WarnerMedia, are exploring a sale of the network.
There have been rumours that a company called Nexstar is looking like the likeliest candidate to purchase The CW.
However, nothing has been officially confirmed.
There’s also the fact that if (hopefully when for The CW) a deal goes through, then the new owners would most likely want to implement a new programming strategy.
This would leave shows such as Batwoman and DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow in a perilous situation.
However, some of these series could end up being moved over to WarnerMedia’s streaming outlet HBO Max.

The thing is, WarnerMedia is about to go through a merger with Discovery, so things are really up in the air at the moment.
In announcing Tuesday’s renewals, CW Chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz did not address the potential sale of The CW.
“As we prepare for the 2022-23 season, these scripted series, along with the alternative series we renewed earlier, will serve as the start of a solid foundation utilizing some of our most-watched series for us to build on for next year and beyond,” the exec said in a statement.
He continued: “These dramas are also important to our overall digital strategy, as they are some of our most-streamed and socially-engaged programming, and we look forward to adding more new and returning series to help strengthen and expand our multiplatform footprint.”
