Aquaman 2 Called ‘Worst DCEU Movie Ever’ After Test Screenings

Aquaman 2 is reported to have had test screenings and reactions aren’t looking good as people are calling it “Worst DCEU Movie Ever”. Rumours also say that Justice League actor Jason Momoa is now desperate to leave the franchise in favour of becoming the new DCU’s Lobo.

It doesn’t also help that when James Gunn presented his and Peter Safran’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, he only expressly declared The Flash and Blue Beetle as “fantastic movies”, which he even says the scarlet speedster’s movie is one that he “really love”. The director, writer and producer, now DC Studios’ co-CEO, only breezed through Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Perhaps it is also the fact that a new slate for the DC Universe is in the works that what remains of the previous universe known as DCEU is sort of just waiting for its turn. Some fans are just saying to get everything over with.

Even though the upcoming The Flash has its hype picking up, it somehow isn’t taking Aquaman 2 along in its stride. What could be wrong with the sequel to the first Aquaman movie? Part of an archived Reddit post (via FandomWire) shares the following:

we’re half a dozen test screenings in and it’s not looking great. I’ve consistently heard over the last half year or so that it’s boring, not as good as the first, and potentially one of the worst DCEU movies.

Not all sequels live up to the reputation of its predecessor. But for a sequel to be commented on as dull? It won’t sit well with the people looking into progressing the franchise.

Even The Rock’s Black Adam practically just broke even, which is saying it optimistically. That movie had mixed reviews. But the same can’t be said for Aquaman 2 based on these supposed test screening results.

Any chance that this will be carried by Momoa’s star power? Chances are slimmer as the actor has yet to prove consistent positive audience reception. However, it’s good that he has been testing his talents in different genres.

Still, a sequel to his blockbuster superhero movie should have raves in test screenings. He’s done it superbly before. But apparently, this Reddit post is also seconded by another industry insider Jeff Sneider, with kinder words saying:

test screenings for [Aquaman 2] have not been good.

Is it the story? The delivery? Is it the cast? Somehow, the fact that Amber Heard is still in the sequel seems irrelevant to the feedback from the test screenings. Reports say that her time in the movie is notably shortened.

There is also the possibility that the movie went through turbulent times as management was shaky during its production. It was only mid-last year when Warner Bros got its s**t together. But again, that can’t be an excuse.

It would be very disappointing if Aquaman 2 does not deliver. Then again, with the new DC Slate coming, it’s not likely that the character would see a third movie. And maybe that is also why Momoa has his eyes on Lobo.

While Gunn and Safran have stated that no actor will portray more than one character in the DCU, it could mean that Aquaman 2 is the last DC movie for Momoa as a superhero.

Maybe, Momoa sees being an alien anti-hero as more appealing. His own recent social media interactions hint at something big happening for him in the near future. But right now, things are vague and rather potentially disheartening.

The King of Atlantis dives into theatres on Christmas Day, December 25th.
