Nintendo’s premier film Super Mario Bros Movie has officially broken the $1 Billion mark based on its global box office performance.

Ever since the film was released, box office earnings have been through the roof. Even though it had mixed reviews before it was released, ticket sales kept pouring in.

While the story was very light, it had tons of nostalgia, easter eggs galore which tempts repeated viewing. We ourselves enjoyed it. Edward even gave it an 8 out of 10 score.

While the audience score was high at Rotten Tomatoes, it’s not really an assurance that it will keep getting good responses from the masses. But week after week, the film kept staying on top of every other film that came after it.

Super Mario Bros Movie has beaten more recent films like AIR, The Pope’s Exorcist, Renfield, Evil Dead Rise, The Covenant, and more recently Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret. Despite experiencing a decrease in sales each week, it still maintains a significant lead over its closest competitor.

Super Mario Bros Movie Has Broken More Than Just The $1 Billion Mark

A report by ComicBook.Com tells us that Super Mario Bros Movie has already reached $1.02 billion on its fourth weekend. In the US, it earned $490 million and $532 million internationally.

Not only that, but it’s also the first film to break the $1 billion milestone in 2023. It’s the fifth film to reach that mark since the COVID lockdown happened in 2020. It joins the ranks of films like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Jurassic World: Dominion, Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of the Water. And it’s the most popular animated film since the lockdown. It even bested Illumination’s own Minions: The Rise of Gru.

Let’s add the fact that Super Mario Bros Movie is the first video game movie that has broken that mark too. Previously, the most successful video game related film was Warcraft which was released back in 2016. The film earned $439 million at the box office.

Not bad for a film which was initially criticized for having Chris Pratt play the iconic video game icon.

While Super Mario Bros Movie hinted that a sequel could feature Yoshi, it’s not clear whether they’ll push through with it. But because of the film’s success, Nintendo is now already planning future films with Illumination.

Jack Black who played Bowser in the film has said that he’d like to see Pedro Pascal take the role of Wario who is an arch-rival of Mario. Seth Rogen, who played Donkey Kong, wants to star in a Donkey Kong Country movie. Charlie Day also expressed his interest in starring in a Luigi’s Mansion film. We reported a couple of weeks ago that this is already a priority for Nintendo.

Nintendo Fans are also wondering if the company will pursue making films based on other franchises like Legend of Zelda, Kirby, Fire Emblem or Metroid.

Super Mario Bros Movie stars Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, Seth Rogen, Keegan-Michael Key and Fred Armisen. Directed by Aaron Horvath (Teen Titans Go! To The Movies) and Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans GO!). Written by Matthew Fogel (The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part).
