Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson Reveals He Considered Adding Anakin Skywalker’s Force Ghost

Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s writer and director, Rian Johnson, revealed he considered adding Anakin Skywalker’s Force Ghost in the movie. However, they ended up deciding against it because he felt Luke Skywalker had a more personal connection with Yoda.

Johnson revealed this in a recent Twitter thread, which you should really read as he offers very interesting insights into his movie. His Star Wars film, The Last Jedi, remains one of the most divisive Star Wars movies ever made. Some people love it, others hate it, and then there are the people who are somewhere in between.

In the movie, there is a scene that I actually really loved in which Yoda’s Force Ghost appears before Luke Skywalker, and Rian Johnson recently revealed he did consider having Anakin Skywalker’s Force Ghost appear instead. You can read what Johnson had to say about this via his tweets below.

Here’s what Rian Johnson had to say about almost adding Anakin Skywalker’s Force Ghost in Star Wars: The Last Jedi:

Briefly for the tree burning scene, but luke’s relationship was with Vader not really Anakin, which seemed like it would complicate things more than that moment allowed. Yoda felt like the more impactful teacher for that moment.

Personally, I think this makes perfect sense. Yoda was Luke’s master, not Anakin nor Obi-Wan Kenobi. As far as the scene was concerned, it felt more logical to have Yoda be the Force Ghost to appear to Luke, and I’m glad Rian went with him and not Anakin. That said, it would have been cool to see Anakin Skywalker return to a Star Wars movie.
