OK, so this is a story that’s been going on for quite some time now, but it looks like we finally have some confirmation of who will be Black Panther in Black Panther 2. According to Andy Signore over at FandomWire, Shuri (played by Letitia Wright) will be the new Black Panther in Ryan Coogler’s upcoming sequel.
This is a very tricky situation for Marvel and Coogler for multiple reasons. Firstly, they have to find a way to be very respectful to the memory of Chadwick Boseman who sadly passed away in 2020. Secondly, they have to come up with some story arc that would make sense as to why T’Challa is no longer the Black Panther.
Thirdly, they have the issue of Letitia Wright’s recent controversy. She posted an anti-vaccination video on Twitter and people got very angry with her. It got so bad that Wright ended up closing her Twitter account. She was also called out by her fellow MCU actor, Don Cheadle.
Shuri is reportedly going to be the new Black Panther in Black Panther 2
Before that Twitter controversy, I think many people believed that they would make Shuri the new Black Panther. There was also the theory that they would end up slitting the mantle between Shuri and M’Baku (played by Winston Duke). That’s the outcome that I like the most.
However, Signore is claiming that his sources are telling him that it will be Shuri who’ll take on the mantle and wear the suit. Here’s what he said about that:
We’re told that currently, the film’s opening will feature Chadwick’s Black Panther character in costume, for a short, respectful tribute, and send off to the character. The specifics of that scene are still being decided on. But T’Challa will pass on. This will leave the state of Wakanda and the throne in disarray. We’re told many characters will vie for the throne, but ultimately one will prevail. We’ve learned Shuri will become the next Black Panther.
Now, all of this is speculation until it’s officially announced by Marvel Studios or we see the film. However, it does make sense for this to be the decision that Marvel and Ryan Coogler have taken as far as the Black Panther mantle’s concerned.
