Buffy The Vampire Slayer’s Return For A Reboot Is Dead

Buffy The Vampire Slayer’s Return For A Reboot Is Dead

Rumors about the return of Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy the Vampire Slayer for a new reboot series is not happening according to the actress. A report from Nerdist puts that point to rest.

There was a plan to reboot the series to be headed by Monica Owusu-Breen. The new series was supposed to be a spin-off of the original show. Unfortunately, this was shelved back in 2022.

Regardless, because of the cancelled reboot, fans still wondered if they’ll ever see Gellar return to the role that made her famous. During an interview with SFX Magazine while promoting Wolf Pack, Gellar said regarding if she is open to returning to playing Buffy:

I’m not. I am very proud of the show that we created, and it doesn’t need to be done. We wrapped that up. I am all for them continuing the story, because there’s the story of female empowerment. I love the way the show was left: ‘Every girl who has the power can have the power.’ It’s set up perfectly for someone else to have the power. But like I said, the metaphors of Buffy were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I am not an adolescent.

Gellar’s answer is the final nail in the coffin. So, for fans hoping that she could eventually return if ever there was a chance, it seems that she’s done with it. No more returning to being Buffy Summers.

Gellar got her international stardom by playing Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The show had an ensemble cast with Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, Anthony Steward Head, Seth Green, David Boreanaz, James Marsters, Michelle Trachtenberg and more. The series had quite a successful run which lasted for seven seasons from 1997 up to 2003. It even got a spin-off titled Angel starring Boreanaz, which in turn lasted for five seasons.

The show gave Gellar several opportunities to star in several movies like I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 2, Cruel Intentions, Scooby-Doo, The Grudge and more.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer ended on a definite note. But it did open up the possibility of more slayers discovering their powers. In other words, the responsibility of being THE Vampire Slayer has ended. The story of Buffy Summers has come to a close.

However, this doesn’t mean that a reboot won’t happen. It can still happen eventually. With Disney pushing 20th Century Studios to make shows and movies, for sure Buffy the Vampire Slayer could come up again sometime down the road.

I was actually interested to see what they were hoping to do with the reboot. But I do also understand why Sarah Michelle Gellar is not keen on coming back. I mean, she still has a career and is still active in most respects. She just started coming back to TV with Wolf Pack for Paramount+.

But it would have been interesting to see that she could pass the torch, so to speak. I mean, some actors never say never in terms of returning to a role, because it could be an amazing opportunity, especially for the fans of the original show.

Now, they have officially shelved the reboot and Sarah Michelle Gellar is not interested in reprising her role. It’s sad that this feels like a definite end to a legacy.

What do you think of Gellar not returning for a reboot series? Do you think that there is a missed opportunity here? Do you want to see a new Buffy The Vamire Slayer series?
