Evil Dead Rise is coming, and its horrific ‘red band‘ trailer has been released, and I’m now scared to go to sleep! The movie is going to be released later this year, April 21st to be exact, and already, the promotional campaign has started, and people seem really excited about this movie.

This will be the fifth movie in the ‘Evil Dead‘ franchise. We had the first movie, which was simply called The Evil Dead. That was released back in 1981, and it was directed and written by Sam Raimi.

The first movie starred Bruce Campbell, a long-time friend of Raimi’s, as Ash Williams. Ash is a character who’s been very much present in most of the Evil Dead movies and TV show spinoffs since the first film was released.

Then, in 1987, Raimi released Evil Dead II, which was a sequel, but also a kind of remake of the first film. It was basically the movie that Raimi had wanted to make initially but didn’t have the money to make.

It was more playful in tone than the first film, and I think that this sequel was the one that really got people on board with what Raimi and Campbell were trying to do in this horror/comedy space.

Army Of Darkness was then released in 1992, and that movie was another departure from the first two films. It still had some horror tones to it, but it was more of an action-adventure film starring Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams taking on an army of the undead.

These were the first three movies, and since then, we’ve seen a reboot, called Evil Dead, which was released in 2013. The movie was directed by Fede Álvarez, and he also wrote the movie’s screenplay.

The movie was a bit more of a traditional horror film, but it still shared the same DNA as the first two Evil Dead films. Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell were producers of the film, and they seemed pretty happy with it.

After the fourth Evil Dead film was released, Campbell returned as Ash Williams in the terrific series, Ash Vs Evil Dead. I believe that this series was basically everything that Raimi and Campbell wanted to do with this franchise.

It was very much a horror/comedy series, and it ended up being cancelled after three seasons, which was a huge shame and fans were very upset about that.

It’s now 2023, and we have a fifth Evil Dead movie coming out, and this one seems very interesting indeed. Evil Dead Rise is written and directed by Lee Cronin and it has been in development since 2019.

The movie was originally going to be released straight to HBO Max, however, after the whole WarnerMedia and Discovery merger, those plans were scrapped, and the film is now being released in cinemas – where it belongs!

Some of you may be asking, how involved are Raimi and Campbell in this new project? Well, the answer is, very. They are both serving as producers on the film, and it seems as though Campbell especially has been very hands-on.

He’s spoken at length about this movie and has voiced his admiration for Cronin and his vision for the film. Campbell gave an interview with BlairWitch.De in 2021, in which he spoke about the film and how much he can’t wait for people to see it:

This one’s dark, this one’s pretty serious. Good, strong performances. It’s a single mom who now has to deal with this book. These days it’s more about the book. That book gets around, that book is handed around, passed along, people try and get rid of it, they try to bury it or destroy it and they really can’t. So this book just keeps popping up, so really it’s just another story of what happens if this book appears in this particular group of people’s lives and how it intersects.

He added:

Lee Cronin is a very serious man, he’s a very serious director. Sam Raimi picked him because he did a pretty good job on a movie A Hole in the Ground. He’s a very atmospheric director and Sam thought, ‘Let’s give this guy a shot.’ It’s gonna be really good, we’ve seen a rough [cut] of it already and it has all the components we need. Like anything, when you see a rough version it just has to be tightened, but we’re good. We’re in good shape.

Evil Dead Rise stars Gabrielle Echols, Morgan Davies, Nell Fisher, Alyssa Sutherland, and Lily Sullivan. The movie will be released in the US and the UK on April 21st, 2023.
