This Year’s Oscars Won’t Have A Host Again And That’s A Good Thing – Here’s Why

It’s been revealed by The Academy that this year’s Oscars (2020) – also known as the Academy Awards – won’t have an official host for the second year running.

Some people might be shocked by this bit of news, but I really am not, and there’s a good reason behind why I’m not surprised The Academy and ABC opted to do this – the Oscars are better sans host.

2019 was the first year for as long as I can remember that the Oscars had no host and that was because Kevin Hart was fired from the position for some very questionable tweets and stand up material.

I’ve been watching the Oscars every year for quite some time now. Don’t ask me why I do it (often for professional reasons), but there is something special about the night.

It’s a pure celebration of cinema, and I really do like that aspect about it. What I really hate about the Oscars is the pomp and ceremony, the back-slapping and the overall self-congratulatory nature of the night.

The Oscars should never get a host again

It’s very difficult to watch three-hours of very rich people congratulate one another for their ‘incredible’ or ‘sterling’ or ‘captivating’ work from the previous year.

It’s basically a load of very wealthy people celebrating the fact that they’re going to get a heck of a lot richer.

The Oscars are often seen as the ‘I’ve made it’ moment for many actors, directors, producers, scriptwriters, sound artists, costume designers, special effects artists, and everyone involved in the business, and yes, they are.

It’s a great moment for whoever’s been nominated and should be celebrated. However, the night if often brought back into that nasty area of back-slapping by one person, the host.

The hosts over the years have made me cringe so much. Oh how I’ve cringed over the years at some of the numbers, the jokes, the opening monologues and the speeches made by some of the Oscar’s many hosts.

Someone like Ricky Gervais will never get to host the Oscars

There’s never really been an opening monologue made by a host at the Oscars that have stayed with me as long as Ricky Gervais’ opening monologue at this year’s Golden Globes.

He really called-out the actors for what they are, hypocrites, and it was glorious to see them squirm in their seats.

However, The Academy would never hire a man like Gervais to host the Oscars. They’d go for someone like Ellen DeGeneres, Jimmy Kimmel, or God forbid Jimmy Fallon or James Cordon.

People who are, as I would describe them, vanilla. They don’t want to rock the boat.

All they want to do is get up on stage, talk about how lovely and talented everyone is, have the actors, directors and producers smile back at them and then get off the stage with their careers left unscathed.

It’s actually quite sickening to watch, and I’m so glad we don’t have to go through it again this year.

A ‘hostless’ Academy Awards is so much better

Last year’s ‘hostless’ Oscars was a real breath of fresh air because it meant we all focused on the films and the winners.

All this said, I would love to see another La La Land Moonlight moment at the this year’s Oscars, and Jimmy Kimmel’s look of shock really made it for me.

Anyway, all we have to do now is wait for the night and sit through another three-hour-long ceremony, or you can just go to bed and see everything on Twitter the following morning.

Are you looking forward to 2020’s Oscars and are you glad there won’t be a host this year, or do you like having someone host the Oscars?
