In 2020, news surfaced that Mindhunter Season 3 had been put on indefinite hold. According to reports from the likes of IGN, Variety, and Collider, the show’s creator, David Fincher, had decided to step away from the series to focus on other projects.

This left the future of the show hanging in the balance, with no clear direction on whether or not it would return for a third season. This has all resulted in fans of the series starting a petition on Change.org calling for the show to be renewed for a third season. It’s now reached well over 40K signatures.

David Fincher’s Comments

During an interview with Collider, David Fincher discussed the reasons behind his decision to step away from Mindhunter. Fincher revealed that the show’s production had been extremely taxing, involving long hours and a tremendous amount of work. He also mentioned that the cost of producing Mindhunter was high, and that it was difficult to justify the expense given the show’s relatively modest viewership numbers.

Fincher went on to say that while he loved the show and the people he worked with, he felt it was time to focus on other projects. This included his film Mank and the animated series Love, Death & Robots, both of which were in production for Netflix at the time. Here’s what he had to say on the matter:

I’m very proud of the first two seasons. But it’s a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn’t attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment. I don’t blame them, they took risks to get the show off the ground, gave me the means to do Mank the way I wanted to do it and they allowed me to venture down new paths with The Killer. It’s a blessing to be able to work with people who are capable of boldness. The day our desires are not the same, we have to be honest about parting ways.

He also spoke to Variety about the show, and he revealed the following:

I don’t know if it makes sense to continue. It was an expensive show. It had a very passionate audience, but we never got the numbers that justified the cost.

Despite the indefinite hold on Mindhunter Season 3, there is still hope that the show may return in some form. We posted an exclusive article a while back now in which we revealed that a source close to Netflix claimed that the streaming giant was still interested in continuing the series. This source stated that Netflix was considering several options for the show’s future, including bringing in a new showrunner to take over from Fincher.

However, it’s important to note that this information has not been officially confirmed by Netflix. As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding Mindhunter’s future, leaving fans to speculate about the show’s fate.

The Cast’s Future

Another factor that could impact the possibility of Mindhunter Season 3 is the status of the show’s cast. Following the indefinite hold on the series, Netflix released the show’s actors from their contracts, allowing them to seek other opportunities. This means that even if Mindhunter were to return, there’s no guarantee that the original cast would be available to reprise their roles.

Nonetheless, some cast members have expressed their interest in returning to the series if it were to be revived. In an interview with Variety, Holt McCallany, who played the role of Bill Tench, stated that he would be willing to reprise his role if the opportunity arose. Similarly, Jonathan Groff, who portrayed Holden Ford, has not ruled out the possibility of returning to the show.

Given the indefinite hold on Mindhunter Season 3, and David Fincher’s decision to step away from the series, it’s difficult to say for certain if the show will ever return. While there is some hope that Netflix may consider continuing the series with a new showrunner, no official announcement has been made.

Furthermore, the release of the show’s cast from their contracts adds another layer of uncertainty to the series’ future. While some actors have expressed interest in returning, there’s no guarantee that the original cast’s return for the third season.

We are still holding out hope that something might be arranged between Netflix and David Fincher to make the third season a reality. However, it’s not looking good, and for now, it seems as though the show is dead at the streamer. Maybe another streamer or network might come in to save the show, but nothing’s been reported about that happening.
