The Game Of Thrones prequel has already proven to be quite the hit on the streaming platform. People all over the world have been tuning in to watch the new series, and you know what, for good reason. This series is one of the best things I’ve watched all year.
However, we do have a bunch of questions. That said, the question I’ve seen people online ask the most is when will Season 2 be released? Well, we are going to look into answering that for you right here, right now. However, we must warn you that the answer we give you might not be something you want to hear. You’ve been warned. We’re also going to go into other stuff, such as who will star in the second season and what could happen in it.

So, the first question I can answer for you guys is whether the second season of this hit new HBO Max series is in the works. I’m happy to report that season two is in the works! It was revealed back in August that this Game Of Thrones prequel series got the greenlight for a second season just after the show’s first episode aired.
The first episode of this new series ended up getting twenty million viewers across all platforms. This was enough for HBO Max and Warner Bros Television to prove that Game of Thrones fever hadn’t diminished since the 2019 finale of the flagship series.
Here’s the show’s official plot synopsis (courtesy of HBO):
The Targaryen dynasty is at the absolute apex of its power, with more than 15 dragons under their yoke. Most empires crumble from such heights. In the case of the Targaryens, their slow fall begins when King Viserys breaks with a century of tradition by naming his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne. But when Viserys later fathers a son, the court is shocked when Rhaenyra retains her status as his heir, and seeds of division sow friction across the realm.

So, now the question is, when will the second season be released on the streaming platform? This is actually a really tough question to answer because the answer isn’t really out there. HBO hasn’t given us an official release date for the second season. We also don’t know when production on the second season will get underway.
HBO is pretty notorious for giving us the first season of a new series and then not releasing the second season for at least another two years. Case in point, Westworld. There was a two-year gap in between seasons 1 and 2 of that series. It’s kind of been going that way ever since with the series. HBO likes to take its time with the new seasons of its more popular shows.
However, there’s been a new report from the Spanish newspaper Hoy which suggested that the production on the second season is going to return to King’s Landing stand-in city of Cáceres as early as next spring. This means that filming for the new season could start in April 2023. This means that the second season could be with us in 2024. These Game Of Thrones-based series take a plot time to make, given that a lot of the work goes on in post-production. Therefore, you can thank the dragons for the long wait. on what it takes to put a season’s worth of dragon war together, one assumes House of the Dragon season 2 is likely arriving in 2024.

There still isn’t an official cast yet for the second season. HBO hasn’t given us that information yet. However, we can look into George R.R. Martin’s source material for clues as to which characters and, therefore, which actors will be back for a second season. I’m fully expecting Matt Smith to return as Daemon. I’m sure that he’ll be joined by Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra, Steve Toussaint as Corlys Velaryon, Eve Best as Rhaenys, Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon II, and Ewan Mitchell as Aemond Targaryen. They’ll all be back and ready to clash in House Of The Dragon Season 2.
There will also be new characters in the upcoming season. Martin has already confirmed that there’s going to be at least one new name: Daeron Targaryen, Viserys and Alicent’s fourth child, who was apparently down in Oldtown throughout season 1 and “we just did not have the time to work him in this season,” Martin said in a blog post from early October.
There are some actors that won’t be coming back for season two. Some of them have aged out of their roles, and others were playing characters that died in the first season. However, one of the major absences in season two will be director Miguel Sapochnik. He’s been part of the Game Of Thrones family for a long time, and he’s now been given a promotion. He’s not going to be one of the series’ main showrunners.
This was revealed after writer and former showrunner, Ryan Condal, announced in late August that he would not return for season two. Instead, another Thrones veteran, Alan Taylor, has stepped in to take on the role of producer-director of season 2.
What could happen in it?
So, as far as the show’s plot in season two, I think that readers of Martin’s first House Of Dragon book, Fire & Blood, know where things are going. I’m going to be honest with you here. I haven’t read the book, so I have no idea where the story will go in season two.
However, I think we’re going to see a lot of green, black, and dragon warfare. As for the specifics of season two, the first season’s final episodes suggest the action will expand beyond the walls of King’s Landing back to the more familiar territory around Westeros.
