Henry Cavill is reportedly in negotiations to join Robert Downey Jr’s Sherlock Holmes 3. To what the role is, it’s too early to say. Sherlock Holmes 3 has been in development since 2011.

Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes (2009) was a box office success. It starred Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law and Rachel McAdams. And the sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) did just as well as the first film. Warner Bros didn’t hesitate to announce a third film after that.

Which is why a lot of fans were wondering, what happened? We’d hear official news every few years, but how long the progress has taken is strange. Even Robert Downey Jr’s own wife, Susan, made an update back in 2014.

In 2016, Warner announced that they have a team of writers working on the script, which includes Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy), Gary Whitta (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel).

More recently, in 2020, Robert Downey Jr and his wife Susan announced that they plan to make films, spinoffs and TV shows. Two shows were even said to be in development for HBO Max. But even the news of the TV shows are also silent.

Just last year, there was news that Sherlock Holmes 3 was supposed to start filming. But again, nothing solid about its production, even today.

What Role Would Henry Cavill Be In The Sherlock Holmes Sequel?

Giant Freakin Robot reports that Henry Cavill is currently in talks to play a part in Sherlock Holmes 3. What his role could be is anybody’s guess.

Of course, he won’t play the famous legendary detective since that’s Downey’s role. But we just can’t forget Cavill played the role of Sherlock Holmes for Netflix’s Enola Holmes.

We doubt that he’ll play famous roles like Moriarty or Mycroft Holmes. Moriarty, played by Jared Harris is presumed dead in the last film. Mycroft Holmes was played by Stephen Fry. So, one possibility is that Cavill could play a new villain for Holmes. GFR adds that they are looking for a “captain of industry” type character.

Henry Cavill’s personality could fit the bill. He did admit that he would love playing a Brit if he could since he is one.

The actor has played villainous roles like in Mission: Impossible – Fallout. His role as August Walker, aka John Lark, stood out. He even impressed Tom Cruise.

Then again, if Robert Downey Jr and his team are planning to make spin-offs. It’s also possible that they might get Cavill to have a bigger role than can span to other projects too.

Henry Cavill has worked with Guy Ritchie before in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Ritchie might not be directing Sherlock Holmes 3, but he may still be retained as a producer.

In 2019 it was announced that Dexter Fletcher, known for Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketmanwould direct the sequel. Fletcher is also known for acting in a variety of films, including Stardust (2007), Kick-Ass (2010) and Terminal (2018).

I would love to see Henry Cavill and Robert Downey Jr. in a film together. Both have played superheroes and the character Sherlock Holmes. They both have a strong presence on the screen, and I look forward to seeing how they would work together.

While Cavill is done with being the Witcher and Superman, he’s currently busy filming The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. He is also producing his first show based on the miniature wargame Warhammer 40,000 for Amazon Studios. We have also reported that he might take the role of Spider-UK in the MCU.
