It’s being reported that Dredd 2 is currently in development and the rumour is that Karl Urban will be returning to play the ritual character, which I think is terrific news! This report comes to us via Giant Freakin Robot, and I haven’t heard anything about this rumour anywhere else, so you can be forgiven for taking this news with a pinch of salt.
That said, there has been talk of making a sequel to Dredd for years. The first movie was written by Alex Garland and directed by Pete Travis. It went on to become a huge cult hit and is easily the best Judge Dredd movie ever made. That said, it’s not like the movie was facing tough competition in that department. The first Judge Dredd movie starred Sylvester Stallone, and it wasn’t very good. The movie was released in 1995, and critics didn’t receive it well, and audiences didn’t seem to like it all that much.
Dredd 2 might be happening with Karl Urban returning

Karl Urban’s star has certainly been on the rise since starring as Judge Dredd all the way back in 2012. He’s since been in a Marvel Studios movie, and he’s been making waves in the industry as Billy Butcher in Amazon Prime Video’s incredible series, The Boys.
He’s terrific in that role, even though his English accent is a bit meh. I love him in the role, and I’m happy to hear that they are making more seasons of The Boys.
Karl Urban was born to play the role
I also think that Urban was born to play the character. He was one of the reasons why the first movie became such a huge cult hit. It didn’t perform all that well at the box office, but it’s found a new lease of life on DVD and streaming. I would be interested to know whether the plan is to make this movie a cinematic release or have it made for one of the streaming services.
My preference would be for the movie to be released in cinemas because I think that’s the best way to watch a Dredd film. I would also love to see Alex Garland return to write and maybe direct the sequel. He’s something of a genius, and he’s already revealed that he would love to return to that world.
