Detective Pikachu 2 Is Happening With A New Director

It looks like Detective Pikachu 2 is actually going to happen, which I actually find quite surprising. Don’t get me wrong. I loved the first movie. I probably liked it a lot more than most people. However, I wasn’t sure that they would ever go ahead and make a sequel.

The first movie, which was released in 2019, was actually one of my favourite video game movie adaptations. That said, we didn’t actually get the Detective Pikachu video game it was based on over here in the West. It was released in Japan, and people really loved it over there.

It was a bit like a Professor Layton game, only you solved mysteries with Pikachu, and he had a very deep and gruff voice. However, they opted to cast Ryan Reynolds in the movie, who doesn’t have that voice at all. That said, I thought his rather annoying brand of humour worked in the movie version for some reason. Still not overly sure why.

According to Deadline, Legendary is in negotiations with a new creative team to take on the theoretical Pokémon: Detective Pikachu 2. The outlet is reporting that Jonathan Krisel, co-creator of the IFC sketch comedy series Portlandia and the FX series Baskets, is likely to take over for original director Rob Letterman, while Chris Galletta (The Kings of Summer) is now on script duties.

What we don’t know is whether the first movie’s star, Ryan Reynolds, is going to return to voice Pikachu. The first movie’s ending certainly raises questions about how exactly that would be possible — but Deadline’s report suggests that the Deadpool actor would have a role to play based on the direction of the film.

I’m hoping that they might go down a different route for the upcoming sequel. I would love to have a more video game-accurate take on Pickachu in this movie. I’ve always loved the idea of Danny DeVito being the voice of Detective Pikachu, and given Reynolds’ newfound friendship with It’s Always Sunny In Philidelphia star, writer and creator, Rob McElhenney (thanks to the fact that they bought the Welsh football club, Wrexham FC together), they might be able to convince DeVito to do it!
