Alfred Molina To Return As Doctor Octopus In Spider-Man 3

It’s being reported by Variety that Alfred Molina will return as Doctor Octopus in the latest Marvel/Sony Spider-Man film, Spider-Man 3. Alfred Molina played Doc Ock in Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire’s 2004 Spider-Man sequel. If you’ve been keeping up with the rumours and insider information on Spider-Man 3, this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

But what a welcome one it is. Not only is Alfred Molina returning to Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man 3, it is expected that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will return as their respective Spider-Men. As well as Jamie Foxx returning to play Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, It has been confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch, playing Doctor Strange, will be joining the cast of Spider-Man 3. And of course, Tom Holland will be returning to play the MCU’s Spider-Man.

With Molina joining the cast, this ties together all 3 iterations of the Spider-Man film franchise. It certainly seems this is all leading up to a Spider-Verse film. Will this be a proper send-off for Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man? Rumours continue to circulate that this is what he has been wanting and has been discussed in negotiations.

I for one was very happy to hear this news. Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 was my favourite film of the franchise and Alfred Molina’s performance as Doctor Octopus was brilliant. Believable, empathetic and driven, he really sold Doc Ock to me. And I was never really that big of a fan of the character. Only time will tell how much screen time he and all the other actors from the previous franchises get in Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man 3. I hope we get to see Tom Holland mix it up with Alfred Molina. Will they be giving us a glimpse of the Sinister Six? One can hope.
