Zachary Levi Talks James Gunn And The Future Of Shazam

At the premiere of Shazam! Fury Of The Gods, star Zachary Levi talked about Shazam’s future under DC Studios. New co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran started changing things up right after they began their tenure last November 1st.

While many fans are worried about which franchise or actor transitions to the newly minted studio, Zachary Levi displays a hopeful countenance. Praising the new leaders of the studio, Levi leaves it all to the people for his character’s future.

Shazam! Fury Of The Gods is among the movies that are slowly bringing people back into the theatres. As public activities are getting more and more permissible in many countries, the movie’s global performance can actually punch in close to pre-pandemic numbers.

Nevertheless, the expectations are set below the first movie’s actual sales at the box office. It appears that the experts prefer to be more conservative in their forecasts. If the turnout at the red-carpet premiere is any indication, then the movie is looking at a favourable position for future iterations.

As company heads come and go, the company itself can get taken over or rejuvenated depending on decisions. Shazam! Fury Of The Gods has its future dictated by the moviegoing populace. This is practically believed so by Zachary Levi. On the red carpet in an interview with Deadline, he said:

It all comes down to what the people want. We made a great movie, I’m really proud of this movie, I hope everyone goes sees it, I hope they tell all their friends and family.

Thus, judging by Zachary Levi’s statement, it seems as though Shazam’s continuation in a franchise is based on the audience and fans actually occupying seats in the theatres starting this week for Shazam! Fury Of The Gods. Out of all the things that needed to be done, Levi ensured the Shazam fans what he could do. He promised:

That’s all I can do: I can show up and be the best Shazam that I can be.

Meanwhile, when asked about his take on the newly appointed co-CEOs for the studio, he said:

I do think that Peter [Safran] whom I’ve known for years and James [Gunn] who I’ve known even longer are really excellent leaders and I trust where they’re gonna take all this stuff.

This is seconded by co-star Rachel Zegler who played the role of Anthea in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. In her words:

We’re all under such amazing leadership with Peter Safran and James Gunn who weren’t at the helm when we started filming. But now that they are, we’re confident about the future of the franchise.

The future of Shazam is currently unknown, but based on the interview with Chris Morgan and Henry Gayden, there seems to be a possibility. At the moment, when they were asked about another sequel, Gayden said:

I cannot speak to that at this moment. Can you [Morgan] speak about that?

Morgan followed:

That is far above my paygrade.

Perhaps the saying “no news is good news” could be a great thing. While the studio has not made an official announcement that Shazam will have its succeeding story, neither are they saying this will be the last time the audience will see Billy Batson and his family as the Shazam family.

Naturally, James Gunn attended the premiere of the movie with his wife, Peacemaker star Jennifer Holland in support of Zachary Levi’s film. Unfortunately, director David F. Sandberg could not make it as the filmmaker tested positive for CoViD.

Gunn, so far, has only high praises about Shazam! Fury of the Gods. It’s pretty much the same thing with Ezra Miller’s The Flash. But we don’t really know the future of Miller in the DCU after The Flash, especially with so much negative press following him around. And even though Ben Affleck’s Batman is in the film, Gunn has confirmed that Affleck won’t be returning as Batman in the new DC Universe.

Shazam has existed in the DCU but hasn’t really bumped into any DCEU character yet, except for that Superman (not Cavill) cameo. This could be one reason why it could potentially move forward in Gunn’s new DC Universe. However, recently, it has been shown that the new film will get that Wonder Woman cameo. So, are Zachary Levi’s Shazam and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman safe in the new DC Universe?

At present, Gunn and Safran are the only ones who would know the big picture for DC Studios. Not one storyline or actor from the DCEU has an official announcement to be in the new DC slate that the new co-CEOs are developing.

However, it is also important to note that of all of those characters, Zachary Levi’s Shazam might just have a fraction of an advantage. Still uncertain, but a bit better of a chance.
