It’s been revealed that a new Tomb Raider series is in the works over at Amazon Studios, and it’s being written and developed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Waller-Bridge is easily one of the most talented people working in Hollywood today, and the fact that Amazon has turned to her to develop this new Tomb Raider series is very promising indeed.

There have been attempts to turn Tomb Raider into a successful movie franchise in the past. The Angelina Jolie movies were pretty successful, but, unfortunately, the Alicia Vikander-lead Tomb Raider film didn’t do all that well.

I actually enjoyed the movie she starred in, and there were plans to make a sequel. However, they were eventually scrapped after the first movie failed to perform as well as they had hoped it would at the box office.

We’re now hearing reports that a TV show is in development and that it’ll be coming to Amazon Prime Video, and I think this is the best idea for this franchise. However, we also heard reports that there are plans to make another movie, which is interesting.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Phoebe Waller-Bridge is set to write the script for the series, which will be based on the popular video game series. The project is currently in the early stages of development, and it’s going to be part of Waller-Bridge’s recently renewed overall deal with the retail giant and streamer.

The Hollywood Reporter’s sources are claiming that  Waller-Bridge does not plan to star in the TV adaptation of the property. The Tomb Raider movies and video games follow the Lara Croft character who was also voiced by actresses including Camilla Luddington, Keeley Hawes and Minnie Driver in a slew of video game titles.

Hayley Atwell also brought the character to life in a Netflix anime series.

As well as writing the series, Waller-Bridge will serve as an executive producer on the show. She’s going to be joined by the former head of comedy and drama, Ryan Andolina and the former head of overall deals, Amanda Greenblatt.

Andolina and Greenblatt launched their own production company and have a deal with Amazon. Dmitri M. Johnson will also exec produce via his dj2 company.

This comes after HBO saw quite a bit of success with their new series which is adapted from a video game, The Last Of Us. It seems as though we are now on the brink of a new cinematic era: the video game adaptation. I have a feeling this might become the new superhero movie genre.
