The Witcher Season 1’s star, Anya Chalotra has revealed how playing Yennefer on the Netflix show has completely changed her life, and it sounds like it was all a little bit daunting for the British-Indian actress.
Daunting, but in a good way. Anya spoke to Stylist about what it’s like playing a role like Yennefer and being part of something as big as The Witcher is.
The Witcher series on Netflix is adapted from a series of Polish books by Andrzej Sapkowski and there have also been three video games from CD Projekt Red.
The Witcher 3 is widely considered to be one of the best video games ever made, so no pressure then when trying to develop it into a TV series.
That said, Netflix reckons they’ve cracked it, and they very well might have done.
It’s not an easy thing trying to bring Yennefer to the small screen
Anyway, back to Anya, who spoke during an interview with Stylist about The Witcher’s huge fanbase.
I’ve never watched Game Of Thrones, but I obviously know how huge it is and how the fans responded to it, and I only hope for similar success with The Witcher because wow – that would be amazing. I don’t think there’s a pressure – it’s only an excitement – and it’s very flattering.
Anya then opened up about what it’s like playing a role which is from books and video games with such a huge fan base as The Witcher has.
It’s very overwhelming. Of course, there are so many opinions flying around – and with that comes negative and positive comments – but I only take the positive away, and there is so much positivity out there. If you focus on that, it’s an exciting time.
It hit me like a ton of bricks when the casting came out. I’m in control of my social media, I can shut it off when I want to and when it gets to in my head, and I can interact with the fans when I want to, too.
I can only do my job and do the best I can as an actor. I only want to believe that the best person for the role will only ever be chosen, and I do know that is what has happened with our show. It’s a fantasy genre, so those brackets are opened – anyone can play these roles. A fantasy is a world where anyone fits in.
The Witcher could be Netflix’s biggest show of 2019
There’s no doubt that Anya has a huge task on her hands in bringing Yennefer to the small screen.
Her character is a complex one and the character from the books isn’t exactly the same as the one from the video games, so that brings its own issues when trying to play the character in the TV show.
The Witcher Season 1 lands on Netflix on December 20th, 2019. Are you looking forward to watching the upcoming series? Let us know in the comments below.
