Secret Invasion Trailer Teases Nick Fury’s Death

The Disney Plus Marvel series Secret Invasion teases the death of Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury in its latest trailer. Secret Invasion is MCU’s major event for Disney Plus.

It is a significant event in the comics as it was told in 8 issues from April 2008 up until December 2008, written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated b Leinil Francis Yu.

Over 30 comics had tie-in connections to the event itself on various titles. This also included New Avengers, Mighty Avengers, Avengers: The Initiative, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Britain and MI:13.

We wonder how the big event is going to be adapted for the small screen. While movie versions of Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) disappointed many, Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019) had lots of praise.

While a TV format would be great for telling a large story, we still wonder how it would affect the overall narrative considering many of the characters would be missing from the comic book.

Could This Be The Last For Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury?

The latest trailer was just released a few days ago, and there was a lot to take in about it. The start of the trailer does mirror similar details to the comic. Similar to the source material, Nick Fury returns to warn the world of the Skrulls’ invasion. The trailer gives the impression that Fury is being transported from a spaceship which is not seen on screen.

It shows that the film is set sometime after the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019). One would remember seeing Talos, who is a trusted ally, covered for Nick Fury for the duration of the movie. The Spider-Man film also showed that Fury was actually in a space station with a group of Skrulls.

Several interesting characters are revealed in the trailer. Sonya Falsworth who is played by Olivia Colman (The Crown) is an old friend of Fury’s, and she is related to one of Captain America’s friends named James Montgomery Falsworth who is part of the Howling Commandos during World War II.

Emilia Clark (Game of Thrones) has been confirmed to be playing the adult version of the daughter of Talos, G’iah. The character first appeared in Captain Marvel, but she was never called by name in the film.

Kingsley Ben-Adir (The OA) plays Gravik as the leader of the rebel group of Skrulls. The trailer also showed that he is stretching out his arms like Mister Fantastic or Groot. In the comics, a Super-Skrull has the abilities of the entire Fantastic Four.

There is a line in the trailer that asks, “Where are the Avengers?” This is another verification that the series happens after the events of Avengers: Endgame. As the Avengers, most of the main group is gone at that point. Ironman and Black Widow have died.

Thor went to space with the Guardians. Hawkeye is retired. Bruce Banner, also known as the Hulk, seems to be the last remaining team member of the Avengers, but he’s not seen in the series. But we do see Captain Rhodes, who is known as War Machine.

An interesting detail shown in the trailer is that Fury’s gravestone is different from the one in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014). In the film, the gravestone had the quote: “The path of the righteous man…” Ezekiel 25:17.

This line is actually a nod to another Samuel L. Jackson film, Pulp Fiction (1994). While the TV series had a different biblical quote saying “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” from John 15:13.

And lastly, Fury says, “One last fight.” This could be interpreted in two ways. One, that this is his last appearance and he’s ready to retire for good or, two, his character will die by the end of the series.

Secret Invasion seems to be a significant shift from previous MCU shows like She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, Hawkeye, Loki, and WandaVision. This does have a bit of the same feel as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

But I do like the fact that we don’t really see any super-powered heroes to help save the day. I know Rhodes could show up as War Machine, but they did not show it here in the trailers.

Samuel L. Jackson has played the role for a decade and a half now, which started with Iron Man in 2008. He has gone way beyond his original contract of nine films for playing Nick Fury in the MCU.

But he has returned for more than that. He has admitted that he enjoys playing the character and will return for more if given the chance. It is interesting though because he said that he’s more of a DC comic book fan.

We don’t know if his character will die in the series. The trailer does imply that he could. Many of the original MCU characters have died or retired. So, it’s not far off to see the possibility of Jackson leaving the franchise. Then again, with the multiverse unlocked, anything can happen.
