Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 was supposed to be released by Sony Pictures 13 years ago today, and just imagine what could have been had the studio ended up giving the project the official go-ahead.

So, the movie was originally slated to be released on May 6th, 2011. It was in development, and honestly, it sounded like this movie was going to be incredible. However, they ended up cancelling the project, which is such a shame, especially when you hear about the actors and characters they were going to bring into the movie.

We already knew that John Malkovich was going to be in the movie playing the Vulture – which was terrific casting, by the way. It had already been revealed that Anne Hathaway had been cast as Felicia Day. However, it was confirmed that she was not going to appear as a Black Cat in the movie, and Bruce Campbell was also going to have a more prominent role in the movie. He had been turning up in cameos throughout the Spider-Man trilogy. However, in this fourth Spidey film, he was going to be playing a version of Mysterio.

There was so much going on in this movie, and it sounded like Raimi was much more involved in this film than the third one, which ended up being totally ruined by Sony Pictures’ interference. I’ve also read that Raimi wanted to include Kraven The Hunter in this fourth film. Honestly, it sounds like it was going to be amazing. We were going to get to see Tobey Maguire play Peter Parker again. However, it all ended up being panned at the very last second, which is just such a shame!

That said, there have been reports and rumours that Sony Pictures might want to start things up on the film again after Spider-Man: No Way Home’s huge box office success. There had been reports that Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi were both on board and that Sony wanted to get work on a fourth Raimi Spider-Man movie ASAP. However, it seems as though the breaks have been put on the project once again.

Raimi spoke to CBR at WonderCon, saying he’s heard the rumours of a Spider-Man 4, but isn’t sure if Marvel would be interested. Here’s what Raimi had to say on the matter:

I did read that, but I’m not actually working on it yet. I mean, Marvel and Columbia are so successful with the current Spider-Man, and the track there, and I don’t know that they’re going to go back to me, and say, ‘Well, folks, we can also tell that story!’ I’m not sure, but I love all the new Spider-Man movies. I loved Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was really, super powerful seeing Tobey again in it.

What do you make of this news? Would you like to one day see Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire get to make a Spider-Man 4? Do you think that Sony Pictures will ever let the project go ahead? We’d love to hear your thoughts on this report.

You can watch Sam Raimi’s three Spider-Man movies on Disney Plus right now.
