There’s a tweet from a Pixar Animations employee that seemingly confirms that Toy Story 4 will be coming to cinemas on June 21st, 2019, which I’m presuming to be a US release date.
I love the Toy Story trilogy. Toy Story was my very first cinema experience, and it opened me up to the incredible world of movies. Toy Story made me want to get involved in film, and then I ended up writing about them for a meagre living. Pixar’s animated film was in my young eyes true magic. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, and I went home afterwards trying to catch out my toys. I would line them all up in a row and then go out the room, close the door and then would look through the keyhole to see if I could spy on them coming to life.
There have been two other Toy Story movies since and whenever someone asks me what the best trilogy of all time is, I always reply “Toy Story” without a moment’s hesitation. There’s not a bad film in the trilogy. The first one is perfect, the second is in great, and I think Toy Story 3 is a modern masterpiece. That said, when I heard that Pixar was planning a fourth movie, I couldn’t help but feel a bit worried. Why ruin something as perfect as the Toy Story trilogy? It’s akin to when I learnt that Spielberg was going to make a fourth Indiana Jones movie.
That said, I do have faith that Pixar won’t pull a Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on us and will make something genuinely good. However, it’s difficult to get that nagging doubt out of the back of my mind. “They’re going to mess this up somehow, and you know it…”. “Shut up, brain!”. That’s the conversation that goes on in my head.
Despite all of that, I’m still interested to see what they do with the fourth Toy Story movie. What are Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Mr. Potato Head, Slinky Dog, Rex Ham and co be getting up to in Toy Story 4. We’re going to have to wait until summer 2019 to find out, which is the film’s release date according to Josh Cooley’s – a Pixar animations employee – tweet.
