New Dave Filoni Star Wars Movie Announced

This is something that’s been rumoured for quite some time now, but it was officially announced that Dave Filoni is going to be making a Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm. Let’s just hope that this movie actually ends up being made.

It had been previously reported that three new Star Wars films were going to be announced at Star Wars Celebration, and those rumours were spot on! They ended up revealing that the next three Star Wars movies would be directed by James Mangold, Dave Filoni, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

The James Mangold one came as a bit of a shock to me. I thought that the third film was going to be the Taika Waititi movie. However, it does seem as though progress on that movie has slowed down quite a bit.

Anyway, the Dave Filoni Star Wars movie will follow “the escalating war between the imperials and the fledging New Republic” that culminates the Disney Plus shows. It is described as a cinematic event set during The Mandalorian timeline.

Filoni has wanted to direct a Star Wars film for quite some time now. It’s always been his goal since joining Lucasfilm. It was actually revealed that he asked Kathleen Kennedy if he could try his hand at directing with his eventual goal to get to direct a Star Wars movie of his own.

Filoni was then allowed to shadow Rian Johnson whilst he made Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Filoni then got to direct episodes of The Mandalorian and The Book Of Boba Fett.

He’s also directed many episodes of the upcoming Ahsoka series which is coming to Disney Plus in August. We still don’t know how many episodes of that show he actually directed.

Could Filoni be getting a promotion?

Dave Filoni has been part of the Star Wars family for a very long time. He first started working at Lucasfilm in 2008 when he directed the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated film and subsequently served as the supervising director on the Star Wars: The Clone Wars cartoon series.

It was in 2019 when Filoni started working on live-action Star Wars projects for Lucasfilm. He helped create The Mandalorian series with Jon Favreau, and since then, his fingerprints have been all over the streaming side of the galaxy far, far away ever since, as he has helped bring both The Book of Boba Fett and the upcoming Ahsoka to life.

I have a feeling that his influence over the Star Wars universe is only going to become even stronger as time goes on. It’s almost as if he’s the Emperor and has been waiting in the wings to take control of the entire Star Wars galaxy.

I’m sure he might not like that analogy, but it tracks. With rumours flying around suggesting that Kathleen Kennedy’s time in charge of Lucasfilm is coming to an end, maybe Filoni is hoping that he’ll be the one that Disney turns to when they start their search for a new head of Lucasfilm.
