In an exciting development for DC Universe fans, Nathan Fillion, a regular in James Gunn’s films, has been cast as Green Lantern in the upcoming Superman: Legacy. This news comes from Vanity Fair, which recently revealed new additions to the cast of the highly anticipated film. Fillion, known for his roles in Firefly, Castle, and The Suicide Squad, will portray Guy Gardner, a character known for his less-than-heroic demeanour when donning the Green Lantern’s power ring.

Superman: Legacy is set to mark the live-action rebirth of the DC Universe, with David Corenswet cast as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The film, written and directed by James Gunn, is scheduled to begin shooting in January 2024 and is expected to set the course for the new DC Universe.

Fillion’s casting as Green Lantern is a significant addition to the DC Universe. The character of Green Lantern has been portrayed by various characters in the comics, with Hal Jordan and John Stewart being the most well-known. Guy Gardner, the character Fillion will play in Superman: Legacy, is distinct from both of them for his somewhat less than heroic demeanour when he wears the matter-manifesting ring that gives the Green Lantern his powers.

Among the rest of the aliens and humans who serve in the Green Lantern Corps, Gardner is known as an abrasive, sometimes obnoxious presence. The role also brings a dose of awkward comedy to Superman: Legacy. The character is known for his iconic bowl-cut haircut, which will be a part of Fillion’s look in the film.

Fillion has been a mainstay in Gunn’s films, starring in the director’s first movie, the 2006 horror-comedy Slither, and his most recent one, Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. His casting in Superman: Legacy marks another collaboration between the actor and director.

Fillion previously played a DC character in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad known as T.D.K., or The Detachable Kid, whose powers consisted of the ability to separate his limbs from his body and telekinetically launch them at his enemies. T.D.K.—spoiler alert—didn’t survive for very long in that movie. So there’s no danger of the actor’s duel roles ever crossing paths.
