It’s been revealed that Ms Marvel director, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, has been tapped to direct a Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm, which is being written by Damon Lindelof. This all comes after we’ve had a lot of news about the future films set in that iconic galaxy far, far away.

There’s been so much news about the future Star Wars movies in the last 24 hours. It seems as though Lucasfilm and Disney are really taking things back to square one as far as the upcoming movies set in the galaxy far, far away are concerned.

We were going to get Star Wars movies from Kevin Feige, Patty Jenkins, Rian Johnson and Taika Waititi. Well, it’s been revealed that the Feige and Jenkins movies have been scrapped by Lucasfilm.

We still don’t know what’s happening with Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy. He’s pretty busy making the Knives Out movies, and it seems as though his Star Wars films are still in development.

It’s also just been revealed that Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film is still happening, and he reportedly wants to star in the movie. That shouldn’t come as much of a surprise since Taika tends to star in any film he makes, even if it’s a minor role.

All of this news was revealed by Variety, and buried deep in their report on all the changes going on with the future Star Wars films was the news that Lucasfilm has approached Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy to make a Star Wars film.

She is a two-time Oscar-winning documentarian (Saving Face, A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness), who made her live-action narrative debut with two episodes of 2022’s Disney Plus series, Ms Marvel.

However, they didn’t stop there. Their report also added that Lucasfilm wants her to direct the movie that Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and Justin Britt-Gibson (Counterpart) have reportedly been writing since last October.

It had been reported by Deadline that Obaid-Chinoy had been approached to make Lindelof’s Star Wars film. However, we haven’t had any more confirmation since that article was published. It seems as though this project is still in the works, and they are getting closer to making it a reality.

What’s going on with the future Star Wars films?

So, as far as the future Star Wars movies are concerned, which are the ones that are still going ahead and in active development. We’ve lost Kevin Feige’s film, Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron, and it looks like Rian Johnson’s trilogy is DOA, which is a shame in my opinion.

The ones that are still happening are Waititi’s movie and Damon Lindelof’s Star Wars picture. Those are the only two Star Wars films that are ‘officially’ in active development. That’s it. There are only two Star Wars movies that are still on the books over at Lucasfilm.

I do wonder whether Lucasfilm is going to be making some pretty drastic changes as far as its strategy for the Star Wars cinematic universe is concerned. I would love to see them do more exciting and different stuff. Wouldn’t it be great if they started experimenting with different genres?

Imagine a horror Star Wars movie? I think that would work! What would you like Lucasfilm to do with their future Star Wars films?
