Harvey Weinstein Hires Bill Cosby's Lawyer

The Weinstein Company co-founder and film producer Harvey Weinstein hires Bill Cosby’s lawyer Jennifer Bonjean.

His company and his name were reputable. Miramax and The Weinstein Company are known for many films like Pulp Fiction (1994), Shakespeare in Love (1998), The Founder (2016), Big Eyes (2014), Silver Linings Playbook (2012), Django Unchained (2012) and many more.

But under that big film and entertainment studio was Harvey Weinstein. He had a reputation of taking advantage of women. Somehow this seemed like a norm and was even used as jokes. But in 2017, everything came crashing down on him. Many women (mostly actresses and models) have accused the producer of sexual abuse and rape.

Harvey Weinstein was arrested and charged with various offenses in May 2018. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison for his conviction in New York in March 2020. In 2021, he was sentenced to 11 years in Los Angeles, which will be served concurrently with his New York sentence. In February 2023, he received an additional 16-year sentence in California for separate offenses, which will be served separately from his New York sentence.

Variety reports that Harvey Weinstein has hired Michael Freedman with Jennifer Bonjean to appeal his Los Angeles conviction. Bonjean is a criminal defense lawyer, owner and founder of the Bonjean Law Group. She was part of Bill Cosby’s legal team back in 2021.

This appeal is intended to challenge Weinstein’s conviction in Los Angeles, which, together with his New York sentence, currently results in a prison sentence for him until 2059.

Juda Engelmayer, Weinstein’s spokesperson has said:

The Bonjean Law Group and Jennifer Bonjean herself understand the issues facing Harvey and knows what is needed; not simply the law, but the environment in which we exist now.

With this team, Harvey’s appeal in L.A. will be made in a way that not only demonstrates errors in applications of law and possible bias in meting out so-called justice, but will also expose how the proverbial deck was stacked in advance against Weinstein. In addition to the criminal appeal, the firm will bring the facts together in answers to the civil suit filed by a witness whom Harvey insists was never with him in the hotel or anywhere.

Interestingly, this is not the first time she has worked with Harvey Weinstein. She represented the film producer back in 2021 when he faced additional sexual charges in Los Angeles.

Miramax still is an active film and television production and distribution company. The company was sold to Disney back in 1993. But now it is owned by beIN Media Group and Paramount. Recently in the past couple of years they have released Operation Fortune, The Gentleman, Halloween Kills, Halloween Ends, Mother/Android.

They have other films currently in development like The Beekeeper, The Georgetown Project, and Old Dads.

The Weinstein Company struggled after the firing of Harvey Weinstein. They tried selling the company but that didn’t push through. The company filed for bankruptcy back in 2018. They sold all their assets to Lantern Capital Group.

This includes films like Snowpiercer, It Follows, Horns, Man of Tai Chi, Inglourious Basterds, The Hateful Eight and several others.
