Marvel‘s GOTG Vol 3 breaks the half-million mark as its box office numbers are still reaching high in its second week. However, the film holds considerable importance as it represents the final instalment in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.

Marvel’s Phase 4 hasn’t really sat well with the MCU fans. While the other Marvel films have generally been doing fine, it’s evident that the MCU is struggling. It’s having a difficult time recapturing the same feeling it had with the first three phases.

Some fans are expressing concerns that Marvel is attempting to cram too much content into a limited timeframe. The ongoing development of numerous movies and interconnected TV shows within the Marvel Cinematic Universe has raised concerns about the impact on storytelling quality.

There is a perception that certain storylines have become weaker and less essential, and the visual effects, particularly in films like the third Ant-Man film, have been underwhelming.

Some fans have been losing a bit of faith in the MCU. Because of it, Marvel’s box office performance has been struggling to keep up with the past films. While Marvel Studios still has successful releases, there is a sense of missed expectations among fans. When Phase 5 entered into the scene, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was the film that was supposed to launch it with a bang, but instead, it has gotten its second rotten tomato rating.

Because of the disappointment, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 had a lot to prove.

In a report by The Hollywood Reporter, it’s been revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 has reached more than $500 million worldwide. And this is just in its second week in the cinemas. On May 14 US domestic box office performance shows it reached $214 million, while the rest of the world reached $315 million.

Marvel’s previous film, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania had a worldwide box office total of $475 million. With that said, GOTG Vol 3 has performed well for Marvel. But there are possibly other factors why this succeeded while others failed.

GOTG Vol 3 director was removed from the franchise back in 2018 after old social media posts were revealed to be inappropriate and considered offensive by many. Because of it, the future of GOTG Vol 3 was unknown. It even came to the point that it seemed a third film might not push through because some of the actors expressed disappointment at Gunn’s firing.

It took almost a year, but Disney did rehire Gunn to continue his franchise. Gunn did make a public apology for his past behaviour. Gunn not only worked on GOTG Vol 3, but he also made a Holiday Special for Disney Plus.

Because of this, people are excited to see the next instalment of his Guardians franchise.

We also have to consider that Avengers: Endgame has put the Guardians of the Galaxy in question because they are missing a critical member of their team. In the film, a variant of Gamora has been missing, and the team is desperately looking to find her.

Other than that, there is a natural progression to all of the characters in the film. The most obvious one is Groot. Fans love seeing him grow through the films. The connection between Mantis and Star-Lord that was introduced in the Holiday Special is also something we looked forward to seeing. And what was the highlight of the movie for James Gunn himself? It is the story of Rocket Racoon.

While the film is not perfect, in fact, critics consider it the weakest of the trilogy based on their rating on the Tomatometer. However, it did hit the right marks for the audiences’ taste as GOTG Vol 3 has the highest Rotten Tomatoes audience score compared to the previous two.

The film continued their stories, and some have even gotten their conclusion. It was a necessary progression to their story. It didn’t feel like it was forced to introduce a major character or it was done just to tell the overall MCU narrative. It didn’t feel like one big joke, nor was it overwhelming us with new characters to learn about.

GOTG Vol 3’s success is not just about the Marvel Universe. It’s about the characters that we follow and possibly the people behind it.
