Denzel Washington and the MCU: A New Chapter?

According to trusted sources from Giant Freakin Robot, before the SAG-AFTRA strike began, Denzel Washington was approached for the role of Dormammu, the anticipated antagonist of Doctor Strange 3. This isn’t the first time Washington’s name has been linked with the MCU. Previously, there were speculations about him playing the world-eater, Galactus.

However, it seems the role of Dormammu has piqued his interest more, especially with Sam Raimi reportedly returning to direct the sequel. Raimi’s reported involvement in the project has seemingly made the offer more enticing for Washington.

I do have to add that Dormammu was seen in the first Doctor Strange movie. However, it seems as though Washington could be playing the physical version of the character. In the first movie, the character was performed through motion capture by Benedict Cumberbatch and voiced by a mixture of Cumberbatch and an unidentified British actor. It would be good to see Washington get to play the role and it would also allow to flesh out the iconic Marvel villain a bit.

A Fresh Collaboration: Sam Raimi and Denzel Washington

While Doctor Strange 3 would mark the first on-screen collaboration between director Sam Raimi and Denzel Washington, sources suggest that the duo shares a good rapport off-screen. This camaraderie might be a significant factor in Washington’s increased interest in the project.

Dormammu in the MCU: A Recap

For those who recall the events of 2016’s Doctor Strange, Dormammu’s introduction might be a bit perplexing. While the film predominantly showcased Mads Mikkelsen’s Kaecillius as the primary antagonist, it was Dormammu whom the sorcerer, Doctor Strange, was trying to prevent from coming to Earth. When Dormammu made his appearance towards the film’s climax, it was merely as a colossal face, with Benedict Cumberbatch providing the facial capture and voice for the character. This portrayal left many long-time Marvel fans wanting, as Dormammu, arguably Doctor Strange’s chief adversary in the comics, had a brief and somewhat underwhelming presence.

If the mid-credits scene from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is any indication, casting Denzel Washington as Dormammu seems logical. The scene introduced Charlize Theron as Clea, who seeks Doctor Strange’s assistance to thwart an incursion in the Dark Dimension. Notably, in the comics, Clea is Dormammu’s daughter. Given this narrative, it’s plausible that Doctor Strange 3 would require an actor of Washington’s calibre to present a more human-like rendition of Dormammu, especially if the character is slated to have an extended screen presence.
