Upon the announcement of Captain America: New World Order at the San Diego Comic-Con last year, objections arose from fans due to the title’s association with an infamous conspiracy theory. At its root, the conspiracy theory is about a secretive emerging totalitarian world government, with much of its present-day connotations directed towards antisemitism.

The outcry from fans was further heightened as the film’s villain, Samuel Sterns, was portrayed by Jewish actor Tim Blake Nelson, leading to accusations of insensitivity and the title being tainted with antisemitism. Consequently, rumours started circulating about a potential change in the film’s title by Marvel Studios.

Following the controversy, Anthony Mackie revealed the new title for the fourth instalment in the Captain America series in an Instagram post. The actor, who plays the role of Sam Wilson in the film, also gave fans a glimpse of his new Captain America costume in the same post. The newly renamed film is now titled Captain America: Brave New World and is set to hit the theatres on May 3, 2024.

Marvel Studios managed to address the controversy, while maintaining the essence of the original title, by merely changing one word. This change has enabled the studio to steer clear of the antisemitic baggage associated with the previous title and step into a new era with Sam Wilson as Captain America.

However, the title Brave New World carries its own set of implications and interpretations. Originating from William Shakespeare’s play The Tempest, the phrase “brave new world” is used by the character Miranda, who speaks of new visitors to the island, oblivious to their ill intentions. The phrase implies a layer of naivety, suggesting that the new era of Captain America may also be fraught with hidden intentions and challenges.

The title also resonates with Aldous Huxley’s dystopian novel, Brave New World, which narrates a story of a futuristic society that revolves around science and efficiency, while suppressing emotions and individuality in its citizens. This connection has led fans to speculate that the film’s villain, Samuel Sterns, might be attempting to create his own ‘brave new world’ through his gamma experiments.

As the new era of Captain America commences with Captain America: Brave New World, fans eagerly anticipate the unveiling of the mysteries and challenges that lie ahead for Sam Wilson. The truth will be revealed when the film is released on May 3, 2024.
