Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse continues the trend of blurring the lines between live-action and animated characters, first seen in Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse. The sequel includes live-action characters in a move that has excited and intrigued fans.

Emma Stone and Bryce Dallas Howard join Donald Glover, who made a cameo in the previous film as the imprisoned Aaron Davis, aka The Prowler, as well as Jason Schwartzman’s The Spot and Peggy Lu’s Ms. Chen from the Tom Hardy-led Venom films.

Emma Stone’s portrayal of Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and its sequel in 2014 is well-remembered by superhero movie fans. Her character meets a tragic end in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, mirroring the fate of her comic book counterpart. Despite this, she is set to make a comeback in Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse.

Before Stone took on the role of Gwen Stacy, Bryce Dallas Howard had already brought the character to life in 2007’s Spider-Man 3, the third film in Sam Raimi’s trilogy. Although the film itself was not a huge hit, Howard’s portrayal of Gwen Stacy was a bright spot, and unlike Stone’s Gwen Stacy, she survives the events of her film. Howard is also set to reprise her role in Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse.

The direction of Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse gives us hints about what to expect from Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse. The sequel to the 2018 film had a stronger focus on Spider-Gwen, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld, with the first 10-15 minutes of the film taking place in her corner of the multiverse, Earth-65. This suggests a more significant role for Gwen Stacy’s character, and consequently, for Emma Stone and Bryce Dallas Howard in the upcoming film.

The release date for Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse was initially set for 29th March 2024. However, it appears that the film might not hit theatres as originally planned, possibly due to a writers’ strike and a potentially looming actors’ strike.

In terms of casting, it’s expected that most of the cast from Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse will return, given that none of their stories were fully resolved. This includes Shameik Moore as two versions of Miles, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, Brian Tyree Henry as Miles’ dad, Luna Lauren Vélez as Miles’ mom, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, Jason Schwartzman as the cosmically enhanced Spot, Issa Rae as Spider-Woman, Karan Soni as Pavitr Prabhakar, Daniel Kaluuya as Spider-Punk, Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’Hara, Andy Samberg as Scarlet Spider, Amandla Stenberg as Spider-Byte, and Mahershala Ali as an alternate version of Uncle Aaron.

Sony has big plans for the Spider-Verse. There’s confirmation of a Spider-Woman spinoff animated feature, which is presumed to focus on Gwen Stacy from Across The Spider-Verse, as well as a live-action film about Miles Morales. Also in the works is a fourth live-action film featuring Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, although this is currently paused due to negotiations between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
