Every Halloween, there are a bunch of horror movies and TV shows that are released on streaming platforms and in cinemas. This year is no exception, and we have some truly wonderful and terrifying horror movies and TV shows coming out this Halloween period.

There are some that we haven’t put on this list. I wanted to take the time to mention some of them here before I get into our top five movies and TV shows to watch this spooky season. There are the likes of Grimcutty, The Watcher, Matriarch and The Good Nurse that are all coming out this October.

5. Prey For The Devil

Prey For The Devil features one of the things I find the most terrifying of all. Yep, you guessed it. Nuns. The movie follows a young nun with a strong interest in demonic possession. Nuns don’t usually engage in exorcisms, yet she joins the priests in training with the Catholic Church.

Sister Ann’s childhood experience prepared her to take on the role which allowed her special permission to train. Once enrolled in the exorcism school, she meets a young girl possessed by the same demon that had once taken her mother. Through a terrifying tale of demonic possession and childhood trauma, Sister Ann is forced to face the entity that once tore her family apart.

Prey For The Devil will be released in cinemas in the United States on October 28th.

4. The Midnight Club

Mike Flanagan is one of my favourite directors working in Hollywood today. He’s made some of the most interesting horror movies and TV shows I’ve seen in a while. He’s the person behind the likes of Doctor Sleep, The Haunting Of Hill House, The Haunting Of Bly Manor and Gerald’s Game.

His new series, The Midnight Club, features a group of teens living in an isolated hospital. Each member is terminally ill, and they bond by meeting every night at midnight to share scary stories. As their friendship grows, they promise not to let death separate their connection. The group reaslises how terrifying that promise can be when one of them dies and supernatural events occur.

The Midnight Club will be released on Netflix on October 7th.

The Halloween movie franchise has been rejuivnated thanks to this new trilogy. We’ve already had two Halloween movies (Halloween and Halloween Kills). We’re now eagerly awaiting Blumhouse’s final Halloween movie, Halloween Ends.

It’s been revealed that the events of this upcoming movie will begin four years after Halloween Kills and feature the franchise’s main protagonist, Laurie, who lives with her granddaughter Allyson. Laurie (played by Jamie Lee Curtis) is finished living in fear and begins to embrace her new life.

Halloween Ends will be released in cinemas in the United States on October 14th.

2. Smile

I’m going to be completely honest with you here, I’m cheating a bit with this one. Smile is a horror film that’s already been released in cinemas, and I’ve watched the movie already. I added it to this list because I genuinely think that this is one of the best horror films I’ve watched in a while.

The movie was written and directed by Parker Finn. It’s his directorial debut and is based on his 2020 short film Laura Hasn’t Slept. The film stars Sosie Bacon as a therapist. She witnesses the bizarre suicide of a patient, and then goes through increasingly disturbing and daunting experiences, leading her to believe what she is experiencing is supernatural.

Smile is out in cinemas in both the US and the UK right now.

1. Hellraiser

This is a movie that I’ve wanted to watch for a very long time. This new Hellraiser movie is a reboot of the franchise’s original 1987 film. It’ll be the 11th instalment of the franchise. There have already been some reviews of this new film, and they have been really, really positive.

The series has a 100 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Hellraiser features a young woman struggling with addiction that comes into possession of a puzzle box. The box pierces her skin and opens the doors to a dimension filled with sadistic supernatural beings. The original film, from Clive Barker, has a cult following, so the positive reception gives faith that this adaptation will bring justice to the series.

Hellraiser will be released on Hulu in the United States on October 7th.
