As we all know, predicting the future in a post-apocalyptic world is about as easy as spotting a Clicker in a pitch-black room. That said, we’ve done our best to sift through the rubble for some precious information.

According to Digital Spy, we can expect the highly anticipated sequel to hit our screens sometime in 2024. However, there have been some outlets and pundits on the Internet who’ve suggested that an early 2025 release date might be more realistic. This would give the show’s creators enough time to put together another harrowing season that will leave us on the edge of our seats, desperately clutching our favourite teddy bear.

Moreover, Ellie actress Bella Ramsey has admitted that it will be quite some time before we get to see season two’s episodes. Here’s what she had to say on the matter during an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show (via Digital Spy):

I think we’ll probably shoot at the end of this year, beginning of next. So it’ll probably be the end of 2024, early 2025.

You can’t have a post-apocalyptic masterpiece without a stellar cast, and it seems like the second season of The Last of Us will be no exception. As reported by Digital Spy, Bella Ramsey, who portrayed Ellie with such ferocity and vulnerability in the first season, has hinted at her return in Season 2. Here’s what she had to say on the matter:

I’m really excited to see where Ellie’s story goes next. I think there’s a lot more to explore with her character.

As for the show’s executive producer, Craig Mazin, he remained tight-lipped when asked about the cast in a Washington Post interview. However, he did hint that some familiar faces might be returning alongside new characters to keep things fresh, saying:

I think fans of the first season will be pleased with what we have in store for them in Season 2. But, of course, we’re also going to be introducing some new characters that will add a whole new dynamic to the story.

The Last of Us Part II video game does feature both Joel and Ellie, so obviously, we would expect to see the return of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in those roles. The story also features Joel’s brother Tommy — played by Gabriel Luna in the first season, so he’s likely to be back, too. It also introduces a new main character named Abby Anderson, as well as Ellie’s girlfriend Dina.

Their roles are yet to be cast, along with characters including:

  • Jesse (Dina’s ex-boyfriend)
  • Owen (Abby’s ex-boyfriend)
  • Lev and Yara (siblings who have been denounced by the Seraphite cult, and who team up with Abby)

Just like a Clicker-infested building, the plot of The Last of Us Season 2 remains shrouded in mystery. However, we can take some educated guesses based on the events of the first season and the source material.

As Consequence’s article points out, the first season covered most of the events from the original game, so it’s likely that Season 2 will delve into the narrative of The Last of Us Part II, the game’s sequel.

In a GQ Magazine interview, Craig Mazin alluded to the possibility of exploring the game’s sequel in the TV adaptation, saying:

We’re always looking for ways to expand the world of The Last of Us. The sequel offered so much in terms of character development and plot twists, so it’s definitely something we’re keeping in mind for the series.

Has a trailer for The Last Of Us Season 2 be released yet?
