HBO‘s incredible post-apocalyptic original drama series is doing so well that they might start filming The Last Of Us Season 2 this year. Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann created the series based on the popular video game from Naughty Dog.

Possibly because the real world is coming to what seems to be the last legs of a global pandemic, people can somewhat relate to what’s going on in the series, but also feel some sort of relief in the fact that what happens in The Last Of Us didn’t happen in real life and is still indeed a work of fiction.

The series already has a solid fanbase thanks to the original video game. When the television adaptation premiered, the viewers understood why people loved Naughty Dog’s game so much. Almost immediately, reaction videos online show how emotionally unsettling the first part of episode 1 was. Long-time players of the game know what to expect and were amazed at how they managed to adapt the scenes to the small screen.

Those who didn’t know were in for an emotional ride. Approaching its penultimate episode on March 5th, the series still amasses more viewers than the previous weeks. And every episode leaves fans emotional and excited at the same time.

Not many viewers out there are saying anything unfavourable about the series. Thus, it shouldn’t have come as a surprise when Collider revealed that they might just be preparing for The Last Of Us Season 2 as we speak. Furthermore, their report also suggests that they might be looking to shoot the second season this year.

In a recent interview – which was for Pedro Pascal’s Star Wars series, The Mandalorian Season 2 – the actor was able to share some information about The Last Of Us Season 2. When asked whether there is a chance they’d begin filming season 2 this year, the actor said:

In the year 2023? Oh, what season are we in now? We’re getting into spring? Yes, there is a chance. Yes.”

No takebacks, Pascal. So, if he’s in it, then his character would have certainly survived the last scene from the latest episode that aired on February 26th. In case you haven’t seen it, what are you doing? Go and watch it now.

The story still revolves around Pedro Pascal’s Joel, who by the last episodes, has already found his brother, Tommy, portrayed by Gabriel Luna. After their reunion, he still proceeds to complete his promised mission to Anna Torv’s Tess. And that is to deliver Bella Ramsey’s Ellie to the Fireflies, an organization that has the means to use her immunity from the fungus and develop the solution to save humankind.

The Last Of Us is already being hailed as one of the, if not THE, best TV show or movie to be adapted from a video game. As the series is quite faithful to the source material, mainly because the original creative minds of the video game itself are behind the television series, there is ample room to assume that The Last Of Us Season 2 would still adhere to the narrative from the second game.

While Season 1 follows the original game, which was released back in 2013, Season 2 could likely follow the events from the original game’s sequel, which was released in 2020. That game was The Last Of Us Part II, which was also developed and co-written by Druckmann. He co-wrote the sequel’s story with Halley Gross. The sequel introduced more characters, relationships, and revenge plots.

A good portion of the second season could also have extended versions that weren’t in the games, much like what they did with Season 1 Episode 3, entitled Long, Long Time. Collider also quotes Ramsey from an interview on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast. She said:

I’m really excited, to be honest, for the Ellie/Dina story.

The story Ramsey was mentioning is another plot in the video game’s sequel. Comparing the first to the second game, the sequel has more people, a broader scope and takes place in more locations. It also seems as though the show’s creator, Craig Mazin, has more seasons in mind for The Last Of Us. He said:

Probably the amount of remaining story [in The Last of Us Part II] would take us more than a season to tell.

There is a possibility that they could split the second part of the game into two more seasons. But, I can’t see this show going beyond three seasons if they’re looking to stay true to the two original video games.
