The Super Mario Bros Movie Wins Its 3rd Box Office Weekend

The Super Mario Bros Movie Wins Its 3rd Box Office Weekend

Still going strong like a player with infinite lives, The Super Mario Bros Movie keeps its win on its 3rd week at the worldwide box office. The initial negative reactions that cast doubt among potential audiences a few months ago seem to be eons in the past. People have gotten over the fact that Chris Pratt gave Mario his voice in the movie. Seems that the directors were right.

While Rotten Tomatoes reflect a critical rating of 59% on the Tomatometer, it displays a fire-flower powered 96% in Audience Score. Similarly, Metacritic shows a Metascore of 46 based on 52 critic reviews, while it also posts a User Score of 8.7 from 1104 ratings under Universal Acclaim.

So, it seems that critics were as critics come, but the audience certainly loves it. And who exactly pays to see the movie? Thus, one can identify which of the two things could be more for the makers of the movie.

Nintendo, Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures would likely look at how audiences respond. Social media is wrought with many raves and posts of excited moviegoers saying how much of a wonderful experience it was to see the movie in the big screen. Definitely, Nintendo’s animated adaptation of their popular video game hit the right spots for audiences and gamers alike.

Certainly, the movie is pleasing the ticket-buying public as comicbook reports that The Super Mario Bros Movie maintains its top spot in the worldwide box office. In its 3rd week, the movie has already amassed over $876M around the globe. Over $434M of that was from domestic sales. Thus, Mario and Luigi are powering up and might just reach the $1B mark throughout its run.

Having seen the movie myself, it was indeed a happy watch. Furthermore, I don’t mind watching it again. We might be buying tickets for it again, too, aside from patiently waiting for it to stream on Netflix in a few months’ time. That in itself is an indication that others could actually be buying a second or third ticket to watch The Super Mario Bros Movie. Also, people watch it with their families and friends.

It is a very good movie for general audiences. Although, there may be some who would not enjoy The Super Mario Bros Movie as much if they were not familiar with the game. Every scene is indeed an easter egg hunt for references to the original video game. There was even a scene that we immediately saw to look like a frame-by-frame skin of the original video game’s first level. It was a fun scene.

Still, for those who aren’t familiar with the video game, we can at least guarantee that The Super Mario Bros Movie isn’t a boring film. So many charming moments are incorporated into the story as well as funny and exciting scenes. We won’t tell you that song for a certain Mushroom Kingdom Princess that is all the rage on Spotify nowadays. The whole story of the movie wasn’t bad as well.

For me, the characters are also very well-written. The brothers’ affection for each other was readily established while showing their individual personal struggles. Luigi feels he isn’t brave enough without Mario, and Mario feels discouraged and unappreciated by their family, particularly their father. Bowser wasn’t a two-dimensional villain as well. And Peaches definitely shows how to ‘Princess’.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic from Matthew Fogel’s writing, Christopher Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto are the producers. The movie stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi and Jack Black as Bowser.

Supporting cast include Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Foreman Spike.
