Squid Game Star Joins Michael Fassbender And Alicia Vikander Thriller

Hope, a new thriller movie, is going to star Squid Game actress Hoyeon together with Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander. The movie is going to be directed by Na Hong-Jin. Clearly, Hollywood is welcoming Korean films and series in all genres with open arms.

The country has been building its film and television industry for decades, and it even had government policies supporting and encouraging the creation of movies and series. From an overall perspective, the country gets to share its culture through films, TV shows and its numerous talent pool of actors and actresses, crews behind the camera, and locations and it all offers a glimpse of the country’s history.

No longer can it be considered just a ‘Korean wave’ of global pop culture. Korean influence on the music industry alone has multitudes of followers and fans. Beyond language, they get to reach more and more audience who loves their featured movies and series, even music and gaming entertainment.

Deadline reports that the Squid Game actress is set to star in Na Hong-Jin’s next thriller, Hope. The director spoke about the actress, saying:

Everything about Hoyeon aligned with what I envisioned for Sung-Ae. Her bold, bright energy will be a great source of strength for this film.

In the upcoming movie from Na, Hoyeon will portray a policewoman who works in a remote harbour town called Hopo Port. A mysterious discovery puts the story in motion leading the residents to situations where survival is of utmost importance against a never-before-seen entity.

The story echoes the style and narrative of the director’s previous features. Apparently, Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander took notice of the director’s work on The Wailing and placed him in high regard. The two actors, who are also husband and wife, will be having Hope as their second movie together since The Light Between Oceans.

Cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo, known for his work on Parasite and Burning, is also on board, marking his second collaboration with Na after The Wailing.

Another piece of information that fuels our anticipation for this movie is the fact that Cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo is also part of the project. This will be his second feature working with director Na, the first one being The Wailing, the drama mystery and horror movie that collected several awards and nominations back in 2017. Hong is also the cinematographer for the Oscar-winning movie Parasite.

Squid Game took the world by storm during the stricter implementation of rules for preventing the covid spread. All countries have passed every possible guideline and binge-watched the series to their heart’s content. The main cast got their names more visible to an even wider range of audience groups.

The phenomenal series opened doors for its cast and crew, especially to the creator, director and lead actors and actresses. Hoyeon was arguably one of those who had the opportunity to explore her potential as an actress, model and celebrity not only in Korea but in the rest of the world.

Her portrayal of the tragic character, Kang Sae-byeok, made its mark and was only the beginning, especially in the eyes of critics and other movers of the industry. She has definitely come a long way from being a part of Korea’s Next Top Model in 2013. And things are still yet to come.
