Lars Mikkelsen Confirmed As Live-Action Thrawn In Ahsoka Series

Two years ago, we reported that Lars Mikkelsen would return to play Grand Admiral Thrawn in the new upcoming live-action Star Wars Disney Plus series Ahsoka. It has recently been officially announced that the actor will be reprising his role in live-action. Our report has been confirmed.

Mikkelsen has played the voice of Thrawn in the Star Wars: Rebels series for 13 episodes. Thrawn is known to be a highly skilled military strategist and tactician.

In the Rebels series, the last time we saw the character was in the season finale, where he and Ezra Bridger while fighting, were sent into hyperspace to an unknown location.

In Timothy Zahn’s book Thrawn: Treason (2019), it was revealed that he and Ezra Bridger worked together to survive that unknown region of the galaxy. But it was never revealed where Bridger ended up. In other words, he’s still missing.

A few days ago, Star Wars Celebration 2023 revealed that Lars Mikkelsen, the voice of Grand Admiral Thrawn in the animated Rebels series, will be reprising his role in the upcoming Ahsoka series.

Google searches regarding his return have been on fire.

Before it was confirmed that Thrawn would be returning and Mikkelsen would be part of the show, it wasn’t really clear if he would be returning to the role.

After witnessing Katee Sackhoff reprise her character in The Mandalorian from the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels, fans were left hoping that other actors would also make a return to the franchise. The news of Mikkelson’s return to Star Wars gave many of us hope that he would reprise his role as Thrawn.

But, of course, at the time, we weren’t really sure. Rey Stevenson, who voiced Gar Saxon in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, was announced to be playing a different role in Ahsoka. He’s playing Baylan Skoll in the new series.

While the latest trailer of Ahsoka did tease Thrawn, it was reported that an extended trailer that was released during the Star Wars Celebration featured more of him played by Mikkelsen. The trailer also featured other characters from Rebels. And it showed that Sabine Wren is still looking for Ezra Bridger.

Thrawn has been an iconic character ever since he was introduced in Timothy Zahn’s Star Wars book, Heir to the Empire, back in 1991. He’s the first villain that I read about that was a blue-skinned alien called Chiss, who is also highly respected by Emperor Palpatine.

The character was even highlighted in video games in Star Wars: TIE-Fighter (1994), Star Wars: Rebellion (1998), and Star Wars: Empire at War (2006).

Of course, all of his appearances were put into Legends, in other words, non-canon. So, it was a delight to see Thrawn return to the Star Wars canon when I saw him in Star Wars: Rebels. Fans are already familiar with the incredible Lars Mikkelsen. Apart from lending his voice to Thrawn, he’s also Stregobor in The Witcher, Viktor in House of Cards, and Charles Magnussen in Sherlock.

Enigmatic portrayal in a fantasy drama perhaps runs in the family as his younger brother Mads Mikkelsen is also in the Star Wars franchise as Galen Erso in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. We can’t be too certain that the brothers aren’t exchanging acting notes. Who knows?
